Preparation and Administration: Decoct in water and drink as tea.
Explanation: This formula treats children with deficiency in the Yangming channel, disharmony of Yin and Yang, vomiting and diarrhea leading to loss of body fluids, irritability, thirst, and dry mouth. It uses the sweet-warm properties of Ginseng Radix (Renshen), White Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu), and Honey-fried Radix Glycyrrhizae (Zhi Gancao) to tonify Stomach Qi and harmonize the Spleen and Stomach; it uses the acrid-warm properties of Radix Aucklandiae (Muxiang) and Leaf Pogostemonis Cablin (Huoxiang) to assist Spleen function; Poria (Fuling) is sweet and bland, separating Yin and Yang and promoting diuresis to drain dampness; Radix Puerariae Lobatae (Gegen) is sweet and neutral, used in double the dosage of other herbs. Its qi is light and floating, stimulating Stomach Qi to ascend fluids and resolving heat in the muscle layer. It is a sacred medicine for treating diarrhea due to Spleen-Stomach weakness, and also treats prolonged diarrhea without cessation, extreme thirst, and dysentery with thirst. Among pediatric formulas, this is uniquely recommended as the first choice; later generations should pay attention to it.
Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder): The prescription details are found in Volume 3, under the section "Malnutrition Syndrome".
To treat watery diarrhea, or diarrhea caused by overeating, or drinking cold water while exposed to summer heat. Use three qian of mashed fresh ginger (Shengjiang) and three qian of aged fine tea (Chen Xi Cha), decoct into a strong soup and drink; it stops immediately. This is because diarrhea arises from disharmony of Yin and Yang in the Zang-Fu organs; Ginger can harmonize Yin, and Tea can harmonize Yang, hence its effectiveness. For those with inherently weak constitutions, add two qian of Lotus Seeds (Lianzi) with hearts removed.
Diarrhea arising from Dampness injury presents with undigested food in stool, lack of appetite, fatigue, and weakness. Use three qian of Earth-fried White Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu) and three qian of White Poria (Baifuling), decoct in water, and take before meals. If abdominal pain occurs, add one qian of Stir-fried White Radix Paeoniae Alba (Baishaoyao) and half a qian of Honey-fried Radix Glycyrrhizae (Zhi Gancao).
Diarrhea caused by Cold presents with abdominal pain and cold hands and feet. Use fourteen grains of Pepper (Hujiao), three qian of fresh ginger (Shengjiang), and three qian of Lightly Fermented Soybeans (Danshichidou), decoct into a soup, and take hot.
A miraculous formula for treating diarrhea with abdominal pain: Take one egg, make a small hole at the smaller end, insert seven grains of Pepper (Hujiao), seal the top with paper, wrap in paper, and bake until cooked. Taking it with wine is more effective. Whether the pepper is swallowed or not does not matter.
For chronic diarrhea due to Spleen deficiency: Use one tael of Earth-fried White Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu), one tael of Wine-fried Rhizoma Dioscoreae (Shanyao), one tael of Lotus Seeds (Lianrou) steamed with hearts removed, and one tael of Wine-fried Fructus Amomi (Sharen). Grind all into a fine powder, mix evenly with two taels of white sugar. Take one to two qian per dose, mixed with rice drink.
Another formula: Take four taels of scorched rice crust (Guoba) from early rice, grind into powder; take four taels of Lotus Seeds (Lianzi) with hearts removed, steam and sun-dry, then grind into powder; mix with four taels of white sugar. Take two to three qian per dose, mixed with plain boiled water, three times daily.
Jicheng Zhixie San (Jicheng Antidiarrheal Powder): Treats chronic diarrhea with divine efficacy; this formula has the most accumulated experience. Use Plantago Seed (Cheqianzi) stir-fried seven times in green salt water, weighed at two taels; stir-fried White Poria (Baifuling) two taels; stir-fried Rhizoma Dioscoreae (Shanyao) two taels; Honey-fried Radix Glycyrrhizae (Zhi Gancao) six qian. Grind all into a fine powder. Take two to three qian per dose, mixed with stir-fried rice soup; using Sour Plum Soup (Wumei Tang) is even better. Truly a miraculous formula.
