This prescription is designed for those who habitually suffer from miscarriage. Frequent miscarriages, although caused by deficiency in the Chong and Ren vessels (Chong and Ren meridians) and weakness of the Spleen and Kidney, will absolutely not occur if one possesses a tranquil and virtuous character with no internal heat; nor will they occur if one can keep the mind clear, restrain desires, and maintain regular daily routines. Those who frequently miscarry all have eccentric dispositions and are prone to violent anger, leading to excess Liver Qi and insufficient Liver Blood. Blood deficiency generates heat, and fire scorches the uterus. Alternatively, if one indulges without restraint, the fetus will inevitably leak and be lost.
However, the methods used by the world to secure pregnancy are nothing but rigid adherence to ancient formulas, believing that Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Sharen (Amomum Fruit), Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), and Aiye (Mugwort Leaf) are excellent for preserving pregnancy. They do not know that using hot-natured herbs to secure pregnancy is like carrying firewood to put out a fire; it not only fails to help but accelerates the miscarriage. I was deeply dissatisfied with this, so I combined three ancient formulas: Neibu Wan (Internal Tonification Pill), Duzhong Wan (Eucommia Pill), and Baizhu San (Atractylodes Powder), naming the new combination Sanhe Baotai Wan (Three-Combined Fetus-Securing Pill). Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) clears Liver fire and cools blood; Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) supports Middle Qi to strengthen the Spleen; Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) nourishes blood and calms the heart; Shudi (Rehmannia Root) nourishes Yin and tonifies the Kidney; Xuduan (Dipsacus Root) fills injuries and strengthens the fetal attachment; Duzhong (Eucommia Bark) benefits the waist and knees and warms the uterus. For those with extreme weakness, Renshen (Ginseng Root) may be added; if strength is sufficient, it may be omitted. Although the herbs are common, their efficacy surpasses miraculous elixirs. This is truly what is meant by "precision in treatment," working as swiftly as an echo. Anyone who frequently miscararies and takes this will surely preserve the pregnancy; it is indeed a sacred medicine for gynecological fetal security.
Furthermore, I must admonish: anyone who frequently miscarries should prepare and take this pill starting from the first month of conception. Miscarriages typically occur between the third, fifth, and seventh months. During these three months, sexual intercourse and anger must be strictly avoided; violating this will certainly cause miscarriage. After the seventh month, there is no danger.
[Formula and Preparation]
Da Huai Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 12 liang): Use 3 liang of Shenren (Amomum Fruit) and 3 liang of Laojiang (Old Ginger). Place them together with Dihuang in a clay pot. First, boil in clear water for two days and nights. When the Dihuang is nearly soft, add good wine. Continue until the Dihuang is thoroughly mushy and the wine has evaporated. Remove, discard the Shenren and ginger residue, and mash the Dihuang into a paste for use.
Da Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 12 liang): Remove head and tail, slice the body. Wash with good wine, dry, and set aside.
Piao Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 12 liang): Take clean, dry slices. Mix with powdered yellow earth and stir-fry until very yellow. Remove, sift off the earth. (For pregnant women who are fat and pale, indicating Qi deficiency, add 2 liang.)
Shi Tiaoqin (Scutellariae Radix, 6 liang): Do not use floating or pithy pieces; select small, solid ones, slice, and stir-fry with wine three times. (Add 1 liang for dark and thin pregnant women; add 2 liang for those with irritable temperaments.)
Mian Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex, 12 liang): Slice, mix with salt water, and stir-fry until the fibers break.
Chuan Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix, 12 liang): Slice, stir-fry with wine.
Mix the above five herbs together, bake dry over fire, grind into fine powder, and sieve. Blend evenly with the prepared Dihuang paste, add a little refined honey, and pound in a stone mortar for over a thousand strikes to form pills the size of mung beans. Take 3 qian sent down with salt water in the morning, and 3 qian sent down with wine before bed at night. Repeat daily without interruption. Pregnant women with inherent weakness require two doses' worth of ingredients. Start taking from the first month; after the seventh month, safety is assured. This formula is extremely divine and sacred; do not slight it.
Regarding labor, Ji Zhai (the author's pseudonym or reference) offers six true words: One is Sleep, Two is Endure Pain, Three is Slow Delivery. I add three treasure characters: "Wei Li Jing" (Not Yet Separated from the Meridian/Pulse). Compared to the six words, this is more intimate and effective. The six words come from laypeople (midwives), whom the parturient may not fully trust; the three words come from physicians, whose authority cannot be doubted. This is truly the golden pill for safe delivery and the supreme medicine for revival. I have saved countless lives with this method. Whenever families consult me during impending labor, regardless of whether the pulse is slippery or choppy, or the pain is tight or slow, I simply say "Wei Li Jing." I then instruct the woman: "The pulse has not yet separated from the meridian [indicating false labor]; this is not true labor. Since the pulse energy is relaxed and leisurely, it will surely be auspicious. You should eat well and lie still, waiting for the proper time." What does this mean? Childbirth relies entirely on the mother's Qi. Hearing that the pulse indicates the time has not arrived, she dares not rush delivery and instead安心的 endures. Once the woman is calm, the whole household is calm, avoiding panic and chaos. There is originally no such thing as difficult childbirth in the world. Those who die from difficult childbirth do so because the time has not arrived, and they are harmed by panic and coercion. Initially, family members panic and lose composure; subsequently, the woman becomes fragile and unwilling to endure pain, or mishandles the process, or experiences uterine inversion. With slight abdominal pain, she cries out immediately. Ignorant midwives claim labor has started, apply water tests, and let her sit on the grass [prepare for birth], acting recklessly. They do not realize that the seven signs of labor have not appeared, fetal Qi is not mature, and the fetus remains still in the womb. How can delivery be forced? Because the fetus does not come down for a long time, the woman becomes fearful and doubtful, refuses food, and gradually suffers from weak Qi and fainting spirit, often dying before delivery.
When I encounter such cases, I only say "Wei Li Jing" and administer large doses of sweet-warm medicines, such as Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) or Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Ingredient Great Tonifying Decoction), to assist the mother's primordial Qi. If it is true labor, abdominal pain will tighten progressively, and the baby will be born naturally due to urgent pain. If it is not true labor, abdominal pain will gradually decrease and slow down, and the fetal origin will become warm and stable. In my experience, midwives claimed the head had reached the pelvic inlet, but I diagnosed the pulse as "Wei Li Jing." Using fetal-stabilizing and warming medicines, I stabilized them. Some delivered a month, half a month, or ten days later. This has happened to over ten people. Is it possible for the head to reach the inlet and remain suspended upside down for a month? This proves midwives are unreliable. Have you not seen Ji Zhai say: Women of loose morals rarely have difficult deliveries with illegitimate fetuses. Because the pregnancy originated from secrecy, fearing discovery, they strive to endure pain. When pain reaches its peak, the baby is expelled effortlessly. Where is the need for midwifery manipulation or miraculous drugs to induce labor? As long as one patiently endures pain and lets nature take its course, everything will be perfect. I dare not endorse drugs for inducing labor.
As for methods to induce labor, they should only be used when amniotic fluid has broken, and the baby has not been born after one or two shichen (4 hours). Amniotic fluid nourishes the fetus; if it dries up without birth, it indicates the fetal origin lacks strength. The longer the delay, the drier it gets, and the weaker the strength becomes. It is necessary to use large doses of Qi and Blood tonics to assist the mother. Among these, Renshen (Ginseng Root) is the most sacred and effective, followed by Tuohua Jian (Decoction for Shedding Flowers) and Xiong Gui Tang (Ligusticum and Angelica Decoction). However, these are only beneficial if the fetus has already exited the sac, the pubic symphysis (Jiao Gu) has opened, and the passage is aligned. If one blindly uses inducing prescriptions based solely on the mother's report of pain or the midwife's claim about the head position, it will not help but accelerate death. Be cautious and beware!
