Cough due to wind-cold is accompanied by frequent sneezing and runny nose, nasal congestion with a heavy voice, and increased saliva and phlegm. Treatment should involve dispersing wind and resolving the exterior, using Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Leaf Decoction) and Jin Fei Cao San (Inula Powder). For dispelling cold, Jia Wei Hua Gai San (Modified Hua Gai Powder) will bring about recovery.
[Note] When children remove their clothes, they may accidentally be invaded by wind-cold. The Lung receives the pathogenic factor first, causing Qi to rebel and rush upwards, obstructing the throat and diaphragm, leading to cough, sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion with a heavy voice, and frequent expectoration of phlegm and saliva. First, use Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Leaf Decoction) to disperse and resolve the exterior pathogen, then use Jin Fei Cao San (Inula Powder) to clear phlegm and stop cough. If cold pathogen is abundant and obstructs the Lung Qi, Jia Wei Hua Gai San (Modified Hua Gai Powder) should be used for treatment. Thus, the wind pathogen is resolved, the airway becomes unobstructed, and when the airway is unobstructed, the cough stops.
Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Leaf Decoction)
Perillae Folium (Suye), Puerariae Radix (Gange), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, prepared with ginger), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, raw), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao, bran-fried), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Poria Cocos with Red Dye (Chifuling).

Decoct in water, take warm after meals.
[Prescription Verse] Hua Gai San treats severe wind-cold syndrome, characterized by shortness of breath, chest fullness, and frequent cough, composed of Mahuang, Xingren, Suzi, Qianhu, Juhong, Gancao, Sangpi, Jiegeng, and Chifuling.
Wheezing manifests as rapid and急促 breathing, lifting of shoulders, abdominal retraction during inspiration, and audible wheezing sounds. Excess-heat patterns present with coarse breathing, chest fullness and hardness; cold-deficiency patterns and those caused by fluid retention can be treated with Ma Pi Feng (Horse Spleen Wind) formula.
[Note] Rapid exhalation is termed "asthmatic urgency" (Chuan Ji). External signs include lifting of the shoulders and abdominal retraction during inspiration. If there are sounds in the throat, it is termed "stridor" (Xiao Hou). However, the origins of disease vary. For instance, coarse breathing, chest fullness, thick phlegm, hard stool, and wheezing indicate an excess-heat pattern; weak breath, faint respiration, inability to sustain breathing, and wheezing indicate a deficiency-pattern. Among these, some wheezing is due to obstruction by wind-cold, some due to rebellion of phlegm-fluid, and there is also the syndrome of Ma Pi Feng (Horse Spleen Wind), which is the most critical condition. Physicians must distinguish them clearly so that medication acts like an echo (i.e., effectively and promptly).
