Alternating fever and defervescence occur; the next day it erupts according to a specific time and subsides according to that same time, just as the tide responds without error. Hence it is named "Tidal Fever" (Chao Re). Generally, this is due to irregular diet causing accumulation and stagnation within, leading to congestion and excess of Qi and Blood, with heat manifesting externally. In cases of latent heat, the stool is yellow and foul-smelling; in cases of retained cold, the stool is white and sour-smelling. The therapeutic method should include separating Yin and Yang (Fen Yin Yang), moving the Eight Trigrams (Yun Ba Gua), moving Water into Earth (Yun Shui Ru Tu), and scooping the bright moon (Lao Ming Yue). For retained cold, add pushing the Three Gates (Tui San Guan); if Qi rushes upward, perform Heaven's Gate entering Tiger's Mouth (Tian Men Ru Hu Kou) and kneading the elbow (Rou Zhou).
If the Heart has been startled, Qi becomes disordered. The body emits slight heat, dreams are accompanied by false fright, the face appears lustrous with spontaneous sweating, the pulse is rapid with irritability. Treatment should be the same as for Acute Convulsion (Ji Jing Feng). The therapeutic method should include separating Yin and Yang, moving the Eight Trigrams, clearing the Heart Meridian (Qing Xin Jing), clearing the Lung Meridian (Qing Fei Jing), clearing the River of Heaven (Qing Tian He), scooping the bright moon, and using Two Horses Mounting Together (Er Ren Shang Ma).
Body heat with a clear complexion, heat in the mouth, frequent irritability and crying, or constipation of urine and feces, requires purgation. The therapeutic method should include separating Yin and Yang, moving the Eight Trigrams, pinching the Heart Meridian (Qia Xin Jing), clearing the Lung Meridian, clearing the River of Heaven, Two Horses Mounting Together, moving Water into Earth, and scooping the bright moon. If limbs twitch and jump, use Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl (Er Long Xi Zhu); if stool is bound, use Two Dragons Swinging Tail (Shuang Long Bai Wei) and retreating the Six Palaces (Tui Liu Fu). It is suitable to administer Yan Shou Dan (Longevity Pill).
Excess of both Qi and Blood, solid-heat in the Zang-Fu organs, heat in both interior and exterior, irritability and restlessness, and intense heat on the skin characterize this condition. The therapeutic method should include separating Yin and Yang, moving the Eight Trigrams, moving the Five Meridians (Yun Wu Jing), kneading the External Lao Gong (Rou Wai Lao Gong), retreating the Six Palaces, clearing the Heart Meridian, clearing the Lung Meridian, clearing the River of Heaven, and scooping the bright moon. The primary technique is pinching Yongquan (KI1) with fingers.
The tongue meridians slightly contract, and the child plays with the tongue frequently. This is due to accumulated heat in the Spleen. Cool-natured methods should not be used recklessly. The therapeutic method should include separating Yin and Yang, moving the Eight Trigrams, clearing Heart Fire (Qing Xin Huo), clearing the Spleen Meridian (Qing Pi Jing), pinching the General Meridian (Qia Zong Jing), pushing the Three Gates, retreating the Six Palaces, Two Horses Mounting Together, and scooping the bright moon. All the above conditions are suitable for administering Yan Shou Dan.
After illness, when Qi and Blood are insufficient, limbs are emaciated, and frequent fevers occur several times a day, this is guest-heat arising from deficiency. It is suitable to regulate Qi and Blood and tonify deficiency, after which the heat will naturally subside. The therapeutic method should include separating Yin and Yang, moving the Eight Trigrams, moving the Five Meridians, pushing the Three Gates, Heaven's Gate entering Tiger's Mouth, kneading the elbow, flying Metal to move Qi (Fei Jin Zou Qi), and scooping the bright moon.
