After birth, within half a day or one day, the infant's complexion turns blue, resembling ink staining; the mouth is loose and does not suckle; the crying voice is low and weak, or hoarse to the point of inability to cry; followed immediately by coma and unresponsiveness. This is the condition. The treatment method urgently employs two slices of fresh ginger placed on either side of the infant's umbilicus. On each slice of ginger, place a ball of moxa wool and ignite it for moxibustion. The heat penetrates into the infant's abdomen, slightly alleviating the cold pathogen, and slight borborygmus (abdominal rumbling) should be heard in response. At this time, observe if the eyes and tip of the nose begin to show a faint normal color, which indicates a turning point for recovery. Subsequently, grind one fen of purple oil cinnamon into powder and one fen of dried ginger into powder, mix evenly with hot water, and administer orally to the infant. Drip warm water frequently to facilitate the medicine entering the stomach. Once yang qi returns and cold resolves, crying will occur first, followed by suckling, and the blue complexion will gradually fade completely. However, one must guard against vomiting in this condition. In fetal cold syndrome, all internal organs are cold; stomach cold prevents retention of milk, so milk vomited shortly after ingestion cannot stay, followed by diarrhea of clear water. When symptoms reach this stage, the condition is extremely critical, leading to collapse soon after. Urgently administer the following prescription orally to rescue; if it is purely fetal cold without external contraction, immediate miraculous effect is expected. Prescription: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) [1 fen], Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) [3 fen], Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) [2 fen], Huo Xiang (Pogostemonis Herba) [5 fen], Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [1 fen], Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) [2 fen]. Decoct with water to make a concentrated decoction, half a wine cup, and administer orally. If the infant originally had fetal cold and subsequently contracted external cold after birth, resulting in cold in both interior and exterior, the onset will be sudden. Immediately, the face and eyes turn dark blue-black and dull, lips are pale without blood color, accompanied by projectile vomiting and diarrhea, coma, abdominal flexion, and limbs colder than elbows and knees; the symptoms appear even more fierce and urgent. As long as the whole body has not become completely cold, there is still hope for rescue. Urgently use Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) added with Hei Fu Pian (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix) and Gong Ding Xiang (Syzygii Aromatis Flos), administer quickly for rescue. Once yang qi is restored, there is hope for life. This presentation resembles Qi Feng (Umbilical Wind / Neonatal Tetanus); under no circumstances should it be treated as Qi Feng. Clinicians must distinguish clearly before applying emergency treatment; otherwise, the consequences would be unimaginable. This condition results from the pregnant mother consuming excessive raw and cold foods, sitting or lying in cool places, or frequently bathing with cold water, among other reasons.
