According to the *Shenghui Fang*: All cases of various types of Dan (erysipelas) in children are caused by wind-toxin residing in the couli (the interstitial spaces between skin and muscle), where heat-toxin clashes with blood, steaming outward. This causes the skin to become hot and red, resembling the appearance of cinnabar applied to the surface, hence the name "Dan". If the condition does not subside, it leads to the rotting of muscle tissue. If the toxic qi enters the abdomen, it can be fatal. Currently, a single formula is used to treat all these conditions, thus it is called "Yiqie Dan" (All-encompassing Dan).
The song from *Yingtong Baojian* regarding various Dan toxins in children states: When Dan fire first forms, it resembles a burning fire; Tianhuo (Heaven Fire) makes the whole body red and abundant; Yifang Huo appears as cyan-black on the sides of the arms; Li Dan starts from the root at the forehead; Dan toxin on the buttocks and anus resembles a band of red violent fire needing regulation; Liu Huo worsens daily upon onset, changing unpredictably with five-color markers; Jia Huo connects the cheeks to both armpits and breasts; Tian Zao affects the inner ankle and the yin region near the sacrum; Redness on the back and knees indicates Fei Dan disease; Dan zao (Urine Zao) in the inner thighs, umbilicus, and yin region invites this illness.
Chao Yuanfang stated: The Huo Dan syndrome presents with symptoms alternating like Taiyang disease (common cold/febrile disease), with redness spreading over the body and enlarging daily; this is it. He also stated: In the Dan Hou syndrome, the eruption appears red like a burning fire, and blisters rise within moments; this is it.
The *Yingru Fang* stated: Huo Dan presents with symptoms alternating like Taiyang disease, with redness covering the body. It is not named after being burned by fire, but rather resembles the rising sun, deriving its name from that imagery, also known as Ri Dan. It is appropriate to use the Loulu San (Radix Isatidis Powder) from the *Qianjin Fang*.
Zeng Shi Jing noted: Chi Zi Dan Liu (Red-purple Dan tumors) are all caused by internal depression of Heart Fire erupting, appearing red like cinnabar. The Heart governs blood, and fire nature is hot; when blood-heat clashes, yin stagnates in yang, causing Dan Du (toxic erysipelas). If the Heart is deficient and cold, there is itching; if the Heart is excess and hot, there is pain. Cases originating from the abdomen and spreading to the limbs are easy to treat; those originating from the limbs and entering the abdomen are difficult to cure. First, use Baijie San (Hundred-Resolutions Powder) to release the exterior, then use Danggui San (Angelica Sinensis Powder) added with Qiaqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) and Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), decocted in water. Also, use Niubang Tang (Arctii Decoction) added with fried Hemp Seed (Cannabis Semen) crushed and decocted together, to vent heat and extract toxins. Next, use Chige San (Red Kudzu Powder), or initially use Huadan Tang (Transform-Dan Decoction). When Dan erupts on the body, similar to previous syndromes, without severe dryness or itching, but floating across the entire body accompanied by mental confusion and displeasure, it is named Yinshi Du Zheng (Yin-Damp Toxic Syndrome). First, use Chonghe Yin (Harmonizing Infusion) added with Nanmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Shuijiang (Fresh Ginger Juice), decocted. Then use Danggui San and Xionghuang San (Realgar Powder). However, for these two syndromes, regardless of whether they are red or white, if they enter the abdomen or Kidneys, they often cause harm and should not be treated lightly as ordinary cases, lest one bring about distress oneself.
Tang Shi believed: Pediatric Dan Du is caused by extreme heat-toxic qi clashing with blood while wind pathogens take advantage, resulting in redness, swelling, and migration across the body, also known as Chiyou Feng (Red Wandering Wind). If it enters the Kidneys or abdomen, it is fatal. Generally, although Dan Du has many types, the pathological source is one. For red Dan Du with whole-body itching, or for girls aged fifteen or sixteen whose pulses have not yet unblocked who frequently develop Dan rashes, all are due to wind-toxin in the blood taking advantage; it is suitable to take Fangji San (Stephania Tetrandra Powder).
