Mu She (Wooden Tongue) refers to the condition where the tongue swells and gradually enlarges until it fills the entire oral cavity. If not treated urgently, it can lead to suffocation and death. [Zeng] states that Mu She presents as a swollen and stiff tongue that interferes with suckling and eating; this is caused by excessive Wind-Heat. One may administer Danggui San (Angelica Powder), Xiehuang San (Drain Spleen Powder), or Yulu Yin (Jade Dew Decoction), followed by applying Xiaohuang San (Drain Yellow Powder) to wipe the tongue surface. The tongue is considered the sprout of the Heart; Heart Heat generates sores and rupture, Liver stagnation causes bleeding like a gush, Splei obstruction results in white coating like snow, Heat causes swelling and fullness, and Wind causes stiffness resembling wood, leading to an inability to open the mouth. Accompanying symptoms include high fever in the four limbs, panting, and speech impediment, which are characteristic signs. The treatment method involves cooling and resolving pathogenic heat in the Upper Jiao and the three meridians of the Heart, Liver, and Spleen, while dispersing Wind and transforming Phlegm. Initially, use Baijie San (Hundred Resolutions Powder) combined with Wuhe Tang (Five Harmonies Decoction), decocted with water, ginger, and Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus). Subsequently, use Niubang Tang (Arctium Decoction) together with Danggui San, added with Sheng Dihuang (Fresh Rehmannia Root) and ginger for oral administration. Alternatively, one may use Zi Xue (Purple Snow) from the *Ju Fang* (Formulas of the Bureau) two qian half, mixed with Banhe (half he) of Zhuli (Bamboo Juice), applied frequently into the mouth, which will resolve spontaneously. Another method involves grinding Baicaoshuang (Charred Herb Ash), Huashi (Talcum), and Mangxiao (Mirabilite) into powder, mixing with wine, and applying externally.
Xiehuang San (Targeting Spleen) Yulu Yin (Targeting Accumulated Heat)
Xiaohuang San Treats Wind-Heat attacking upward, causing stiff and swollen tongue that does not subside.
Fenghua Puxiao (Weathered Mirabilite) Zhen Puhuang (True Lygodii Spores) (each half liang)
Dry the Puhuang, grind into fine powder, and mix thoroughly with Puxiao in a mortar. Use one zi or half qian each time, dabbing and wiping the upper and lower surfaces of the tongue.
Baijie San (Targeting Acute Convulsion) Wuhe Tang (Targeting Blood Loss) Niubang Tang (Targeting Throat)
Chuanxiao San Treats pediatric Mu She.
Puxiao (One liang) Zhen Zi Xue (True Purple Snow) (Five qian) Yan Shi (Salt) (Two qian half)
Grind all into fine powder. Take five fen per dose, add two or three drops of Zhuli (Bamboo Juice), mix with warm water, and apply to the tongue. Swallowing saliva is harmless.
[Danxi] stated: For granule-like sores appearing on the tongue, apply juice from Sangbaipi (Morus Alba Bark); two or three applications yield excellent results.
The *Bencao* records a treatment for pediatric sores on the tongue preventing suckling: Mix Baifan (Alum) with a chicken egg, place in vinegar, and apply to the sole of the foot; healing occurs after fourteen days (two sevens). The *Qianjin Fang* suggests burning Fengfang (Honeycomb) to ash and collecting dust from room corners in equal parts, mixing them evenly for application. Another method is to apply Sangbaipi juice to the nipple for the infant to suck. Yet another is to mix Yangti Guzhongsheng (Medulla from Sheep's Hoof Bone) with Hufen (Lead White) for external application. The *Waitai Duanju* recommends burning Ouyu Gu (Cuttlefish Bone) to powder, mixing with Ji Dan Huang (Egg Yolk), and applying. The *Yingru* text suggests burning Kuigen (Malva Root) to ash and applying a small amount daily. The *Zhang Jifeng Fang* prescribes Ye Qiangweigen (Wild Rose Root), chopped finely; take one spoonful, decoct with two cups of water until reduced to six-tenths, strain, and gargle while hot; spit out when cool. This treats persistent mouth and tongue sores.
