Within one hundred days after birth, if the infant feels cold in the mouth and abdominal pain, experiences shivering and trembling of the body, frequently trembles, curls the legs and clenches the fists, cries incessantly day and night, or has a locked jaw that cannot open, this is named Tai Han (Fetal Cold). The etiology of this syndrome involves the mother experiencing abdominal pain during delivery while the fetus was still in the womb; as stated in the medical classics: "Tai Han is often accompanied by abdominal pain." It may also result from the mother's preference for consuming sweet, greasy, raw, or cold fruits, or from external contraction of Wind-Cold, Summer-Heat, and Dampness prior to pregnancy, treated with cooling medicines that internally injure the fetal Qi. Consequently, after birth, the infant becomes lethargic and sleepy, occasionally vomiting undigested milk or passing white loose stools. If not treated early, it will inevitably develop into Slow Convulsion (Man Jing Feng) or Slow Spleen Wind (Man Pi Feng). For such presentations, Chonghe Yin (Harmonizing Decoction) and Danggui San (Angelica Powder) should be combined and decocted with water-warmed ginger to induce mild diarrhea. Once diarrhea ceases, Yunqi San (Qi-Regulating Powder) should be administered to regulate and tonify. When diarrhea stops, Qi harmonizes, spirit calms, pain subsides, and limbs extend freely, Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) is used to nourish Stomach Qi, followed by Baishaoyao Tang (White Peony Decoction) to dispel Cold-Dampness. The nursing mother should abstain from raw, cold, and frozen foods and beverages to facilitate recovery. Another condition presents with slightly cold hands and feet, slight blueness of the lips and face, sweating on the forehead, refusal to nurse or eat, and increased crying at night, resembling the previous syndrome but lacking cold mouth and chills; this is named Zang Han (Visceral Cold). This disease is worse at night and lighter during the day, accompanied by abdominal pain, borborygmus, and watery diarrhea, sometimes without diarrhea. This syndrome also occurs within the first hundred days, caused by prolonged exposure to cold air during delivery, bathing the infant with cold water ginseng soup, cutting the umbilical cord too short, or inadequate ligation, allowing Cold pathogen to invade. Bai Shaoyao Tang (White Peony Decoction) and Chonghe Yin (Harmonizing Decoction) added with salt-fried Huixiang (Fennel Fruit) and Zhuyu (Evodia Fruit), decocted with water ginger, are indicated, and the nursing mother should take them concurrently. [Tang Shi] states that infants with Cold in the womb who suffer further Wind injury due to improper care after birth present with blue-white complexion, cold extremities, trembling of hands and feet, and locked jaw, which is due to Tai Han (Fetal Cold); alternatively, Cold may enter the viscera through deficiency, causing abdominal pain and intestinal twisting (see "Cold Abdominal Pain" section for treatment methods).
