This condition arises from the pregnant woman frequently bathing in hot water, lying for a long time on a heated kang (brick bed), or overeating fried, roasted, and spicy foods. The manifestation involves erysipelas (a skin infection) appearing on the head, face, and limbs. The redness migrates unpredictably. Initially, Tianbao Caiwei Tang (Tianbao Preserving Vein Decoction) is used to release the exterior, followed by Dalianqiao Yin (Great Forsythia Decoction). If the erysipelas is caused by improper breastfeeding and accompanied by constipation, Sishun Qingliang Yin (Four-Obedience Cooling Clearing Decoction) should be used to promote bowel movement, after which the condition will resolve spontaneously.
"Jing" (Convulsion) and "Feng" (Wind) have different names but identical symptoms, such as a cyanotic complexion, convulsions and spasms, locked jaw, fever, and stiffness of the back. If the eyes are fixed or rolling wildly, it is extremely difficult to treat. One should first manipulate the Jingmen and Weiling acupoints along with Kunlun (BL60). After a short while, flex the infant's little finger and vigorously rub the Wailaogong (EX-UE18) point. Subsequently, apply Yuanxiao Fire therapy to stabilize the condition, then administer Zhuru Gao (Pig Milk Ointment). This condition results from the pregnant mother having a strong temper, acting out violently, falling, or colliding, which damages the Heart Blood, affecting the fetus. Externally, it is triggered by contact with Wind pathogen.
Taihuang (Neonatal Jaundice) occurs when the pregnant woman contracts Damp-Heat, which is transmitted to the fetal sac. Consequently, upon birth, the infant's face, eyes, and entire body appear golden yellow, accompanied by high fever, constipation, and dark urine. Treatment employs Dihuang Yincheng Tang (Rehmannia and Capillaris Decoction).
My fellow student and friend, Mr. Fang Mengju, had a son. Shortly after birth, his entire face turned cyanotic like indigo dye. He called at my door at dawn. I adjusted my sleeves and went to examine him. I determined this was an extreme case of Taihan (Neonatal Cold). Pressing Jingmen and Weiling yielded no response. I flexed the little finger and rubbed Wailaogong, then applied Yuanxiao Fire therapy, adding moxa to Feishu (BL13) one cone and Shaoshang (LU11) one cone each, followed by breastfeeding. I anticipated vomiting and prepared Huoxiang decoction in advance. Indeed, he vomited, and I administered the Huoxiang decoction. By morning mealtime, the cyanosis at Tianting (CV24) had receded, and by noon, his entire face had turned red. This is one sign of verifying symptoms through observation of color.
A man surnamed Fang had a son who did not suckle within seven days of birth. As I was in the commandery, other physicians were consulted and misdiagnosed the condition as Qifeng (Neonatal Tetanus). Upon my return, I intercepted him on the road to provide treatment. I observed extremely dry lips, a complexion that was red with a dark tint, and significant heat. I surmised that the inability to suckle was due to swollen and stiff gums. I pricked once at the bone junctions with a needle; upon bleeding and releasing pressure, the infant immediately began to suckle. I prescribed Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) 1 qian, Zaocenter Tu (Caulis Cinnamomi? No, Zao Xin Tu - Hearth Earth) 2 qian, and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) 5 fen, decocted and administered orally. The infant recovered immediately. This is one verification of diagnosing by observing color and examining orifices.
My tongnian (fellow examination graduate) and xueyou (classmate), Mr. Hu Zengqi, gave birth to a male child on the fourth day. His residence was about forty li away, making consultation inconvenient, so he came to tell me: the child's face was yellow, and there was slight fever. I reasoned that if it were Qifeng, the yellowing would not cover the whole face, so I asked about the eyes. He replied that the eyes also showed signs of yellowing. I stated, "This is definitely Taihuang." I provided him with the formula for Dihuang Yincheng Tang, and the child recovered. This is one verification of knowing the disease by asking about the color.
