Fetal Cold: Within half a day or one day after birth, the infant's entire face turns blue-green as if dyed with indigo. The mouth does not suckle milk; there is initial crying followed by cessation of crying and coma. This is Fetal Cold. Observe that the infant's eyes and nasal tip show no yellow coloration, and the mouth does not emit puffing sounds; it is definitely Fetal Cold. Firmly grasp and pinch the Xuandaoint (Xuandaodian) and Weiling point (Weiling) in opposition, and firmly grasp and pinch the Kunlun point (Kunlun, BL60). If the infant makes a sound, immediately apply the "Fifteenth Lantern Fire" to sever the umbilical cord; or if no sound is produced, still apply this fire, then the sound will surely emerge, milk will be sucked, and the blue-green complexion will gradually recede. However, for this condition, one must guard against vomiting. In Fetal Cold, the internal organs are all cold. The stomach receives milk first; due to stomach coldness, it cannot accept it, hence vomiting inevitably occurs. Treatment uses Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) 1 fen, Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) 1 qian, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 3 fen, Huo Xiang (Pogostemonis Herba) 5 fen. Self-healing ensues upon administration. There are also cases with delayed onset. If fetal cold exists but external wind-cold invasion is absent, onset may be delayed by two to three days. If fetal cold exists and cold is contracted again after birth, onset occurs within half a day to one day. The face must be blue-green, lips white, stool white and loose, or there may be lethargy, abdominal pain, inability to suckle, cold and curled limbs with clenched fists, or incessant crying. All these indicate Fetal Cold. Treatment must not mistake this for Umbilical Wind (Neonatal Tetanus). One should differentiate it using the methods for Umbilical Wind. Treatment is suitable with Lizhong Tang (Replenish the Middle Decoction) plus Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). If prolonged, it may transform into Pan Chang Nei Diao (intestinal colic/spasm), treated suitably with Gouteng Gao (Uncaria Paste). This condition results from the pregnant mother's preference for raw and cold foods and her habit of sitting or lying in cool places.
Fetal Heat: The entire face is deep red. Although redness is the natural color of newborns, people may find it difficult to distinguish. The natural color is pale red, light and pure. The heat color is deep red and dry, dry and mottled. For example, there may be a sensation of surging heat in the mouth, or the tongue swells and becomes red-purple, breath feels hot to the touch, constipation, scanty and dark urine, and redness inside the eyes. These all indicate Fetal Heat. If the gums are swollen and hard, preventing suckling, pierce the area between the upper and lower teeth at the bone junction with a silver hairpin to induce bleeding, then suckling will naturally resume. Subsequently, use Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus) 1 qian, Fu Long Gan (Usti Carbonis) 2 qian, Che Qian Cao (Plantaginis Herba) 1 qian, decocted and taken orally, or use Da Lian Qiao Yin (Large Forsythia Decoction). This condition results from the pregnant mother's preference for sleeping on heated kang beds and her liking for fried and roasted foods.
