Once an ocular disease has developed, various activities should be avoided. Diet, daily routine, sexual exertion, and social interactions can all damage the eyes. For instance, alcohol promotes fire (inflammatory heat), lust depletes spirit (Shen), garlic blurs vision, and anger injures the eyes. Pungent and spicy foods are warm in nature and stir up fire; "triggering" foods (such as fishy or mutton products) disturb Qi movement; even foolish people know to avoid these. Some individuals lose their sight due to contact with fragrant substances, while others suffer blurred vision due to drunkenness. Furthermore, facing wind while near fire, enduring summer heat or winter cold recklessly, are all causes of disease. Procedures such as cutting with knives and needles, scraping, fumigation, moxibustion, and bloodletting, if not strictly contraindicated, cause significant harm; these are often tricks by quack doctors and should be sternly rejected. Dust and sand blowing about, smoke and fumes steaming, are particularly to be avoided by those whose eye diseases have not yet healed. The brilliance of sun and moon, and bright red or purple colors, should not be stared at for long periods by those with weak vision. Disgusting odors and foul smells not only pose a risk of triggering illness but also threaten vision. Those who understand the value of life should preserve their clarity and protect their bodies; how can they lightly disregard life and harm themselves?
