The eyes have two eyeballs, just as the sky has the sun and the moon. What is the reason for sudden dimness? The answer is: It is all due to excess in alcohol and sexual activity, sorrow, worry, thinking, and weeping, or drunkenness and overeating, leading to uneven distribution of blood in the Zang organs, depression of the Liver Meridian, thus causing disease. It is suitable to apply Huye Zhenzhu Gao (Tiger Liquid Pearl Ointment) and take Mingmu Liuqi Yin (Brighten Eyes Qi-Regulating Decoction).
Mingmu Liuqi Yin treats eye opacities (membranous obstructions covering vision), a feeling of hidden roughness making it difficult to open the eyes, cold tears triggered by wind, frequent sudden redness, blurred vision, and seeing black spots before the eyes.
Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome, processed) Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus, fried) Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos) Baijili (Tribuli Fructus, fried and thorns removed) Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, fried) Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica)
Manjingzi (Vittariae Semen, fried) Gancao (Licorice Root) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Muzei (Equiseti Herba, nodes removed) Cao Jueming (Cassiae Semen, fried, above ingredients each 0.7 qian) Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in rice wash water, 0.6 qian)

What is the reason for redness and swelling of the eyes? The answer is: Heat pathogens from the Five Zang organs attack inward, causing sudden exuberance of Heart Fire, which is caused by drinking alcohol. It is suitable to apply Qinglong Huye Gao (Green Dragon Tiger Liquid Ointment) and take Xixin San (Clear Heart Powder) and Yanggan Wan (Sheep Liver Pill). (Prescription see Question 71)
Xixin San treats Liver heat transmitting to the Heart Meridian, accumulated heat attacking upward, eyelid roughness and pain, eyeball pain, excessive heat and wind.

Decoct with water and take after meals. (The prescriptions in Questions 5 and 63 are different from this one.)
What is the reason for redness without pain in the eyes? The answer is: This is Liver Excess syndrome. The Liver is the organ that stores blood; when the Liver is excess, blood is abundant. Abundance leads to Qi and Blood rushing upward, invading and penetrating the pupil, hence redness without pain. If pain is severe enough to prevent sitting or lying down comfortably, it is suitable to apply Fenglin and Yangnao Yu (Phoenix Feather and Sheep Brain Jade) and take Xiegan San (Drain Liver Powder).
Xiegan San
Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome, 5 qian) Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica, 1 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian)
Grind together into fine powder, take 2 qian each time with hot water.
What is the reason for redness with dimness, appearance of black clouds, and redness at the outer canthus (large corner) of the eyes? The answer is: This is Liver Deficiency syndrome. The Liver belongs to Wood, and Wood generates Fire. When the child steals from the mother (Fire draining Wood), dimness occurs. When Fire flares up, Wood declines. If Heart Fire is exuberant, there is surplus blood, which pours into the outer canthus and invades the pupil spirit, causing the eyes to be both red and dim. It is suitable to apply Huye Gao (Tiger Liquid Ointment). For Liver Excess, take Xiegan San (Drain Liver Powder). (Prescription see Question 3.) For Gallbladder Deficiency, take Budan San (Tonify Gallbladder Powder). For exuberant Heart Fire, take Xiexin San (Drain Heart Powder).
Budan San treats internal and external opacities of the white and black parts of the eye. For Gallbladder Deficiency, purging acts as tonifying.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Jili (Tribuli Fructus) Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum) Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) Gancao (Licorice Root, each 2 qian)
