Various schools' collected prescriptions and medicines are arranged sequentially according to the discussions. This compilation lists only specific formulas for each category. Those that borrow ancient formulas with modifications and can be used universally across categories roughly follow the meaning of ancestral formulas, and are placed in a separate volume later.
Hou's Black Powder (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treats severe wind disease causing heavy and uncomfortable limbs, and a sensation of cold and deficiency in the heart.
Chrysanthemi Flos (3 liang) Atractylodis Rhizoma (1 liang) Saposhnikoviae Radix (8 qian) Platycodonis Radix (6 qian) Scutellariae Radix (4 qian) Ginseng Radix Poria Polyporus Asari Radix Angelicae Sinensis Radix Zingiberis Rhizoma Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Cinnamomi Ramulus Ostrea Concha (calcined) Alumen (each 2 qian 2 fen)
The above fourteen ingredients are crushed into a powder. Take one fang cun bi (a square-inch measure) with wine, three times a day. For the first twenty days of treatment, take it mixed with warm wine. Avoid all fish, meat, and garlic. Prefer cold food for sixty days; this allows the medicine to accumulate in the abdomen without immediately descending. Hot food causes it to descend quickly. Cold intake naturally aids the medicinal power. (*Wai Tai Mi Yao* uses this to treat wind-epilepsy).
"Severe wind causing heavy and uncomfortable limbs" indicates Spleen Earth being constrained by Wind-Water pathogen, with Qi binding internally and failing to distribute to the four extremities. "Sensation of cold and deficiency in the heart" occurs because turbid Qi fills the chest, Heart Fire is trapped internally and cannot vent out; extreme heat manifests as a false cold syndrome. Chrysanthemum is used as the sovereign herb to resolve internal heat under the heart. Saposhnikovia, Cinnamon Twig, Asarum, and Platycodon ascend and open the interstices. Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes strengthen the Spleen to prevent Wind invasion. Ligusticum and Angelica moisten dryness and extinguish fire. Oyster Shell and Alum astringe the intestines and stomach, keeping the properties of Ginseng and Atractylodes accumulated and不散 (undispersed), aiding their long-term efficacy. Ginger and Scutellaria are one cold and one hot; the cold acts as a guide for Wind, and the hot acts as an undercover agent against Fire. Warm wine is used to direct the medicinal properties to the exterior to open obstructions. Cold food and avoiding hot substances prevent Alum from descending too quickly due to heat, as Alum stops when cold but descends when hot. Guo Yong stated: Black Powder is originally for cleansing Wind-Heat. The use of astringent herbs like Oyster Shell and Alum, along with cold food to accumulate medicine in the abdomen followed by hot food, allows Wind-Heat, Phlegm, and filth to gradually descend.
Feng Yin Tang (Wind-Guiding Decoction) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*, named Zi Shi San in *Qian Jin Fang*): Clears Heat-induced paralysis and epilepsy; treats adult Feng Yin disease and pediatric convulsive epilepsy with frequent daily attacks.
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma Zingiberis Rhizoma Longgu (calcined, each 1 liang 2 qian) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Ostrea Concha (calcined, each 6 qian) Talcum Gypsum Fibrosum (each 1 liang 8 qian)
Lithii Carbonas Halloysitum Rubrum Quartzum Roseum Halloysitum Album Aquae Frigidae Lapis (if unavailable, substitute with Sal Gemmae) Cinnamomi Ramulus (each 1 liang, *Qian Jin Fang* uses Cinnamomi Cortex)
The above twelve ingredients are crushed into segments, stored in a leather bag. Take a pinch of three fingers, boil in three sheng of well water for three boils, and take one sheng warm. (*Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* borrows it for Jiao Qi/Gout; Guo Yong borrows it for Fire Reversal).
Wind externally governs the Jueyin meridian, internally corresponds to Liver Wood, ascends to hand meridians, descends to foot meridians, and reveals Shaoyang Ministerial Fire. Thus, Wind arising internally is generated by Fire-Heat. Wind generation inevitably damages Middle Earth (Spleen/Stomach); Spleen disease leads to immobility of the four extremities, accumulating fluids into Phlegm. Paralysis is Wind-Wood carrying Phlegm to the limbs; Epilepsy is Wind-Heat disturbing the meridians, internally corresponding to the Heart Master. The previous formula disperses Wind outward; this formula guides Wind inward for excretion. Hence, Rheum is used, combined with Licorice, Cinnamon Twig, Talcum, and Gypsum to transform Wind-Heat. Ginger acts as a counter-agent to prevent Fire rejection. Quartz and Aquae Frigidae Lapis moisten Blood dryness. Lithii Carbonas, Longgu, and Ostrea Concha fill voids, cutting off the path for Wind-Fire recurrence.
Qian Jin San Huang Tang (Thousand Gold Three Yellows Decoction) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treats stroke causing limb spasticity, joint pain, irritability, fever, mental confusion, aversion to cold, and loss of appetite for days.
Ephedrae Herba Scutellariae Radix (each 3 qian 8 fen) Angelicae Pubescentis Radix Asari Radix (1 qian 5 fen) Astragali Radix (6 qian)
The above five ingredients are decocted in water and taken warm. The first dose induces slight sweating; the second induces profuse sweating. If Heart Heat, add Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (0.5 qian). If abdominal fullness, add Aurantii Fructus (one piece). If Qi rebellion, add Ginseng Radix (3 qian). If palpitations, add Ostrea Concha (2 qian). If thirst, add Trichosanthis Radix (2 qian). If pre-existing cold, add Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (one slice). Shi Wan said: This formula, called San Huang Tang by Qian Jin, treats persistent aversion to cold and loss of appetite, resembling internal/external deficiency-cold. Yet it uses bitter-cold Scutellaria, seemingly hindering the warm-dispersing action of Ephedra. Using Ephedra with large-dose Astragalus seems to hinder exterior Qi closure. However, persistent aversion to cold resembles deficiency-cold but is actually caused by Wei Qi deficiency failing to overcome pathogens. Loss of appetite is due to internal Wind-Heat accumulation. "Irritability, fever, mental confusion" clarifies the condition. Thus, while Ephedra, Peucedanum, and Asarum open interstices externally, Scutellaria clears internal Wind-Heat. To address Wei Qi deficiency making sweating difficult, large-dose Astragalus is added, similar to Astragalus Jian Zhong Tang. Astragalus has two purposes: assisting Ephedra's opening power and preventing recurrent deficient Wind. Adding Rhei addresses persistent Heart Heat after taking previous meds, guiding it downward. Adding Aurantii, Ginseng, Ostrea, and Trichosanthin treats excess Qi or supports the root, varying by syndrome. Adding Aconite assists Ephedra's evaporation and Astragalus's warming of channels, not treating Yin-Cold. It shares origins but differs in flow from Mahuang Fuzi Xixin Tang. The naming by Qian Jin honors *Jin Gui*. Qian Jin compiled *Bei Ji Qian Jin Fang* following *Jin Gui*, remembering its source.
Qian Jin Zhu Li Yin Zi (Thousand Bamboo Juice Drink): Treats Feng Fei (wind flaccidity) with no body pain, inability to control limbs, and mild mental confusion. First take Bamboo Juice (20 parts), Puerariae Radix Juice (10 parts), and Ginger Juice (1 part) mixed. Then take Zhu Li Yin Zi.
Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma Stephaniae Tetrandrae Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata Ginseng Radix Paeoniae Radix Alba Scutellariae Radix Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Cinnamomi Cortex (each 1 fen) Antelopi Cornu Polygonati Rami Dioscoreae Rhizoma Almond Semen Ephedrae Herba Saposhnikoviae Radix (each 0.5 fen)
The above thirteen ingredients are boiled until reduced by half. Add Bamboo Juice (10 parts), Puerariae Radix Juice (5 parts), Ginger Juice (0.5 part). Divide into three doses to induce sweating. Repeat every two to three days. Adjust dosage based on progress after three doses.
Di Huang Yin Zi (Rehmannia Decoction): Treats Kidney Qi failing to connect with the Heart, causing aphasia and leg flaccidity.
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix Morinda Officinalis Radix (wine-soaked, bone removed) Cistanche Deserticola (wine-soaked, decay removed, sliced, dried) Corni Fructus (pitted) Dendrobii Caulis Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix White Poria Polyporus Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma Polygalae Radix (soaked in Licorice soup, bone removed) Sweet Cinnamon Bark Ophiopogonis Radix (heart removed, each 1 liang) Schisandrae Fructus (5 qian)
Grind into coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose with 5 slices of Fresh Ginger, one Jujube, seven Mint leaves. Decoct in water. Take twice daily, anytime. Yu Jiayan said: Cinnamon, Aconite, and Morinda in this formula are originally for expelling turbid Yin and Phlegm-Saliva. Do not discard them based on personal bias.
Tian Ma Wan (Gastrodia Pill): Treats Kidney deficiency-heat generating Wind.
Gastrodiae Rhizoma Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (these two soaked in wine for two days, then dried) Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma Black Ginseng Radix Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (each 4 liang) Eucommiae Cortex (wine-fried, 7 liang) Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (dehulled, one piece) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (10 liang) Raw Rehmanniae Radix (wine-soaked, dried, 16 liang)
Grind into powder, mix with refined white honey to make pills. Take seventy pills with boiling water in the morning and warm wine before bed. Although Rehmannia and Angelica nourish Yin-Blood as sovereign, the妙用 (wonderful use) lies in Gastrodia and Achyranthes being soaked and dried together, causing Wind-Phlegm and turbid dampness to sink downward rather than rise. The effectiveness also relies on Aconite's potency to lead Rehmannia and Angelica directly into the Lower Jiao to fill voids, preventing Wind recurrence. Smilax and Eucommia remove interior damp-heat; Notopterygium and Black Ginseng disperse exterior Wind-Heat. Treating both root and branch methodically, astringing and dispersing appropriately, this formula is complete.
Niu Huang Qing Xin Wan (Calculus Bovis Clearing Heart Pill) (Prescribed Bureau Formula): Treats excessive Phlegm-Saliva in the center, coma, unresponsiveness, slurred speech, convulsions, and all Phlegm-Qi obstruction syndromes.
Calculus Bovis Antelopi Cornu (do not expose to fire, shaved to powder) Poria Polyporus Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (raw) Cinnamomi Cortex Angelicae Sinensis Radix Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (each 3 qian) Moschus Realgar (refined, water-flown, each 2 qian) Borneolum Syntheticum (0.5 qian) Ginseng Radix Rhinocerotis Cornu (each 5 qian)
The above twelve ingredients are finely powdered and mixed evenly. Form pills with honey into fifty pills. Coat with gold foil. Dry and protect with wax. Melt before use with boiling water or Ginger Soup. (Original formula included Saposhnikoviae Radix, Scutellariae Radix, Ophiopogonis Radix, Paeoniae Radix Alba, Bupleuri Radix, Platycodonis Radix, Almond Semen, Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Asini Corii Colla, Sojae Semens Preparatum, Coccidis Pollen, Massae Fermentatae Medicamentosa, Ampelopsis Radix, Zingiberis Rhizoma, Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma, Jujubae Fructus - 16 items removed for being too complex.)
Qing Xin Niu Huang Wan (Clear Heart Calculus Bovis Pill): Treats sudden stroke with coma and muteness, Phlegm blocking the Pericardium, drooling, irritability, rapid breathing, and all Phlegm-Heat obstruction syndromes.
Western Calculus Bovis (3 qian) Chen Dan Nan Xing (aged Arisaema cum Bile) (1 liang) Coptidis Rhizoma (soaked in Ginger juice, fried, 5 qian) Angelicae Sinensis Radix Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (roasted, each 3 qian 5 fen) Cinnabar (5 qian, water-flown)
Grind to ultra-fine powder. Mix with steamed bread dough. Make fifty pills. Coat with gold foil. Dry and protect with wax. Cut open before use. Dissolve in Ginger Soup, Mint Soup, or Ginseng Soup according to deficiency/excess.
Zhi Bao Dan (Precious Treasure Pill) (Prescribed Bureau Formula): Treats sudden stroke collapse, obstruction of Phlegm-Fluid, Blood, and Qi, with alternating cold and heat.
Raw Unprocessed Rhinocerotis Cornu (shaved) Cinnabar (ground, water-flown) Realgar (ground, water-flown) Raw Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum (shaved) Succinum (do not expose to fire, ground, each 1 liang) Moschus (ground) Borneolum Syntheticum (ground, each 1 qian) Gold and Silver Leaf (fifty pieces each) Western Calculus Bovis (ground, 0.5 liang) Benzoin Resin (passed through clear wine, filtered sand, approx 1 liang pure, simmered to paste; if unavailable, use Storax Oil)
Grind Rhino Horn and Tortoise Shell to fine powder. Mix with other ground ingredients. Boil Benzoin paste in double boiler, add other ingredients, knead into pills. Make hundred pills. Protect with wax. Before use, cut open. Dissolve two pills in Ginseng Soup.
For sudden exposure to mountain miasma or postpartum evil blood attacking the Heart, dissolve in Child's Urine with Ginger Juice.
Su He Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill) (Prescribed Bureau Formula): Treats Transmitted Corpse (consumption), sudden Heart/Abdominal pain, collapse/unresponsiveness, all Qi obstruction, Cold syndromes.
Styrax (separately ground, white is best) Benzoin Resin (simmered in clear wine, filtered sand, each 2 liang) Frankincense (separately ground) Borneolum Syntheticum (separately ground) Symplocos Merita Flower Bud Moschus (separately ground, no fire, each 1 liang) Pseudostellariae Radix Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma Aquilariae Lignum (finely ground separately) Cyperi Rhizoma (fried) Unprocessed Rhinocerotis Cornu (shaved, finely ground separately)
The above eleven ingredients are powdered and mixed. Add refined honey to form pills. Fifty pills. Coat with 1 liang water-flown Cinnabar. Protect with wax. Before use, cut open. Dissolve one pill in Well Water, Ginger Soup, or warm Wine. (Original included Sandalwood, Long Pepper, Terminalia Chebula - removed for being too astringent/dry. Su He Xiang Wan uses aromatic herbs to open Cold obstruction. Rhinoceros Horn serves as a guide for "Cold treating Cold," similar to Borneol and Cinnamon in Zhi Bao Dan.) Li Shicun said: Niu Huang Wan and Su He Xiang Wan are generals breaking through gates in Stroke treatment, but functions differ greatly. Heat blocking orifices uses Niu Huang Wan to open; Cold blocking orifices uses Su He Xiang Wan to open. For deficiency-collapse signs like open mouth, scattered hands, closed eyes, snoring, spontaneous sweating, incontinence, urgently use Ginseng and Aconite for strong tonification to save life. Using Niu Huang or Su He Xiang would cause death upon ingestion.
Xi Xian San (Thin Saliva Powder): Treats sudden stroke collapse with excessive Phlegm-Saliva. Contraindicated if pulse is weak/faint.
Swallowwort Fruit (four strips, remove skin/strings, fry in butter, grind separately) Alum (1 liang, half raw half calcined, grind)
Take three zhi amount,灌 (pour) down with warm water. If not revived, repeat shortly. Another prescription: Six Beladonna Seeds (remove skin/membrane, grind, press oil out), melt into Alum. When Alum calcines to powder, mix with Swallowwort powder. Take 4-5 fen, blow into nose to induce vomiting. Turbid Qi surges upward, displacing Clear Yang, causing sudden collapse. Treat the branch first to clear throat for medication intake. Stop once patent. Attempting to exhaust all Phlegm depletes fluids needed to nourish sinews, causing spasms and sinew atrophy – a major taboo.
Shu Jin San Sheng San (Relax Sinews Three Saints Powder): Treats facial deviation, left tight/right loose, blood vessel pathogen.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix Cinnamomi Cortex Corydalis Rhizoma (equal parts)
Grind to powder. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct in water, remove dregs. Take morning and evening.
Shen Gui San Sheng San (Ginseng Angelica Three Saints Powder): Treats Wind invading blood vessels, left hemiplegia, mouth/eyes deviating to the left.
Remove Corydalis from Shu Jin San Sheng San, add Ginseng Radix. Wind invading blood vessels requires circulating Ying Qi. Ying moves within vessels; thus, avoid indiscriminate use of Wind-expelling drugs. "When Blood moves, Wind extinguishes itself." Left hemiplegia indicates Qi/Blood stagnation. Corydalis consumes Blood; dare not use lightly. Must rely on Ginseng to guide Angelica and Cinnamon. Why worry about deficient Wind not dispersing?
Zheng She San (Correct Tongue Powder): Treats Startled Phlegm blocking orifices, Liver Heat generating Wind, stiff tongue, misalignment.
Scorpion Tail (remove poison, soak in rolling vinegar, fry, 3 qian) Poria Polyporus (1 liang, mix with Ginger juice, sun-dry)

The above sixteen ingredients decoct in water. Divide into three doses. Acupuncture points: Fengchi, Jianyu, Quchi, Zhigou, Wushu, Yanglingquan, Juxiaolian (one needle each, total seven). After one dose feels better, take another dose, then needle once. Nine doses, nine needles for cure. Moxibustion also works.
Yi Yi Ren Tang (Coix Seed Decoction): Treats Wind-Damp Bi, joint pain and stiffness.
Coix Seed (1 liang, Ginger soup soak) Paeoniae Radix Alba (wine wash) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (each 1.5 qian) Ephedrae Herba (de-jointed) Cinnamomi Ramulus (each 8 fen) Atractylodis Rhizoma (skin removed, stir-fried with sesame, 1 qian) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (roasted, 7 fen) Fresh Ginger (7 slices)
Decoct in water. Take anytime. If spontaneous sweating, add Gypsum. If irritability/pain, add Wine-processed Phellodendri Cortex. If cold limbs/spasm, add Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix.
Sheng Ma Wei Feng Tang (Cimicifuga Stomach Wind Decoction): Treats Stomach Wind with good appetite, numbness/tingling in limbs, eyelid twitching, facial swelling.
Cimicifugae Rhizoma Angelicae Sinensis Radix Angelicae Dahuricae Radix Puerariae Radix (each 6 fen) Atractylodis Rhizoma (processed, 8 fen) Ephedrae Herba (de-jointed) Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix Cardamomi Fructus (ground) Viticis Fructus (ground, each 4 fen) Bupleuri Radix Phellodendri Cortex (Ginger processed, each 3 fen) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (roasted, 5 fen) Fresh Ginger (3 slices) Jujubae Fructus (one piece)
Decoct in water. Take away from meals. Note: Wind entering Stomach Fu causes bloody diarrhea; use Renshen Wei Feng Tang's Cinnamon/Paeonia to disperse internally. Wind entering Stomach Jing causes facial twitching/swelling; use Sheng Ma Wei Feng Tang's Cimicifuga/Pueraria/Ephedra to disperse externally. Distinction is crucial.
Xi Jiao Sheng Ma Tang (Rhino Horn Cimicifuga Decoction): Treats Wind-Heat head/face swelling/pain, sticky cheeks, throat discomfort.
Unprocessed Rhinocerotis Cornu (shaved, 3 qian) Cimicifugae Rhizoma (1 qian 5 fen) Saposhnikoviae Radix Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (each 1 qian 2 fen) Angelicae Dahuricae Radix Scutellariae Radix Bai Fu Zi (each 6 fen) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (roasted, 4 fen)
Decoct in water. Take warm away from meals.
Wu Yao Shun Qi San (Litsea Smooth Qi Powder) (Prescribed Bureau Formula): Treats sudden stroke Qi attack, whole-body numbness, slurred speech, facial deviation, throat obstruction, phlegm sounds.
Ephedrae Herba (de-root/joint, soak) Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Litseae Fructus (each 3 liang) Bombyx Batryticatus (fried) Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma Aurantii Fructus Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (roasted) Angelicae Dahuricae Radix Platycodonis Radix (each 1 liang) Zingiberis Rhizoma (roasted, 5 qian)
Ten ingredients ground to powder. Take 0.5 liang per dose with 3 slices Fresh Ginger, one Jujube. Decoct in water, take hot. Wu Henie said: This is a branch-treatment formula, suitable for early stage excess pathogens.
Jie Feng San (Resolve Wind Powder): Treats Wind causing chills/fever, dizziness, limb pain, numbness, upper diaphragm congestion.
Ginseng Radix (2.5 liang) Ephedrae Herba (de-jointed, 1.5 liang) Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma Angelicae Pubescentis Radix Asari Radix Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (roasted, each 1 liang)
Grind to powder. Take 4-5 qian per dose with 5 slices Fresh Ginger, seven Mint leaves. Decoct in water. Note: Originally Qian Jin San Huang Tang minus Astragalus/Scutellaria, plus Ginseng/Ligusticum/Licorice. Former prevents Wind/clears Heat; latter dispels deficient Wind. Same origin, different flow. People know Ginseng tonifies deficiency but forget its ability to expel pathogens and drain excess. This syndrome involves long-standing deficient Wind. Using only Ephedra without Ginseng to support Stomach Qi will fail.
