Fuzi Wan (Aconite Pill): Treats Bi syndrome caused by dampness, where the whole body feels as if emerging from water.
Pao Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix), Pao Chuan Wutou (Prepared Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix), Guigui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Chuanjiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, each 4 liang), Gusuibu (Drynariae Rhizoma, sliced and stir-fried with ginger juice), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma, baked), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, raw, each 2 liang).
Make pills using refined white honey, sized like wu-tong seeds. Take 30-50 pills per dose, administered with warm wine. Take one dose in the early morning before eating, before meals, and before going to bed.
Huoluo Dan (Meridian-Activating Pill) (from *Ju Fang*): Treats pain caused by cold-dampness invading the meridians, resulting in limbs unable to flex or extend.
Pao Chuan Wutou (Prepared Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix), Dilong (Pheretima, removed soil and stir-fried then ground), Paonanxing (Prepared Arisaematis Rhizoma, each 3 liang), Ruxiang (Olibanum), Moyao (Myrrha, ground with wine, filtered, settled, and dried, each 1 liang 2 qian).
Grind the above five herbs into powder. Use wine-qu dough to make pills, sized like bullet seeds. Dry thoroughly and protect with wax. Before taking, open the wax shell. On an empty stomach, dissolve the pill in Jingjie Decoction (Schizonepetae Herba Decoction), aged wine, or Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction). Do not use if the painful area is red and swollen.
Tie Dan Wan (Iron Bullet Pill): Treats tendon spasms, bone pain, numbness, dizziness, and loss of sensation.
Pao Chuan Wutou (Prepared Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix, 1 liang 5 qian), Ruxiang (Olibanum), Moyao (Myrrha, each 1 liang), Wulingzhi (Trogopterori Faeces, ground with wine, settled to remove sand/stone, dried, pure herb 4 liang), Shexiang (Moschus, 1 qian).
Grind into powder. Make pills using drops of water, sized like bullet seeds. After meals, take one pill with mint tea; before bed, take one pill with warm wine. Compared to Huoluo Dan, both are generally used for pain caused by cold-dampness. For obese individuals with wind-phlegm flowing into the meridians, Huoluo Dan is suitable. For thin individuals with wind-toxicity injuring the blood vessels, Tie Dan Wan is suitable. If there is red swelling and vexing pain due to damp-heat, or swelling and pain from impending carbuncles/toxins, both formulas are strictly contraindicated.
Huangu Dan (Bone-Replacing Pill): Treats wind-withered weakness, Bi syndrome, cold-dampness wind qi, crane-knee disease, etc.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang), Hujingbing Zhanggu (Tigris Ossis Tibia and Palmar Bone, one set, stir-fried with su [rendered fat]), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chuanbi (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma, each 2 liang), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, 4 liang), Guiban (Testudinis et Chelydrae Carapax et Plastrum, stir-fried with su, 1 liang), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Wancansha (Bombyx Batryticatus, stir-fried), Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus, Yousongjie (Pinus Massoniana Node, each 5 liang), Baiqiegen (Solanis Lycopersici Caulis, 8 liang, steamed over rice), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in rice wash water, peeled, stir-fried, pure herb 4 liang).
Place the above herbs in a large jar of unadulterated wine. Put the herbs in a silk bag, suspend it in the wine, and seal tightly. Wait for 14 days, then open the jar to take the wine. Do not face the jar mouth when opening, lest the herbal vapor irritate the eyes and face. Drink about one cup at a time. Do not let the medicinal effect cease. When the wine is finished and the illness is cured, dry the remaining herbs, grind them into powder, and make pills using rice drink paste, sized like wu-tong seeds. Take 70-80 pills per dose on an empty stomach with warm wine. Avoid foods that generate wind or are acrid and hot. This medicine can be taken regularly. However, if red swelling and pain occur, especially worsening in spring and summer, it mostly belongs to damp-heat, which is not suitable for this formula.
Shigong Gong Yaojiu (Minister Shi's Medicinal Wine): Treats wind-dampness pain.
Formula: Huangu Dan minus Guiban and Cangzhu, plus Biejia (Trionycis Carapax) and Cang'erzi (Xanthii Fructus).
