Treats dysentery with fever caused by Yin deficiency, characterized by thick and sticky pus and blood in the stool, as well as intermittent dysentery (Xie Xi Li).
Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, 3 liang), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried until black), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, each 1.5 liang), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed, 1 liang).
The above four ingredients are crushed and sifted. Ejiao is dissolved by boiling in vinegar to form pills, sized like wu-tong seeds. Each dose consists of 40-50 pills, taken three times a day (day and night), administered with rice water. (This formula) facilitates the movement of the "three chariots" of Essence, Qi, and Spirit.
It separately regulates the Upper, Middle, and Lower Jiao (San Jiao) to harmonize Yin and Yang.
This condition arises because excessive Yang-heat injures the Yin essence. Therefore, Huanglian is used to restrain the rapid pace of the "deer chariot" (clearing heat and stopping dysentery); Ganjiang is used to spur the fatigue of the "ox chariot" (warming the middle and dispelling cold); Ejiao is used to rescue the sinking of the "sheep chariot" (nourishing Yin, nourishing blood, and stopping bleeding); and Danggui is used to harmonize the scattered Essence, Qi, and Spirit.
Ejiao Wan: Treats disharmony of cold and heat invading the Three Yin meridians, causing abdominal pain and passage of pus and blood.
The base formula of Zhuche Wan uses Ejiao and Huanglian each at 2 liang, Danggui and Ganjiang each at 1 liang. Add Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum, quenched in vinegar, water-flown), Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi, quenched in vinegar, water-flown), each at 1 liang; Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, prepared with ginger juice) at 0.5 liang. Form pills with rice water, sized like wu-tong seeds.
Each dose is 30 pills, taken twice during the day and once at night, administered with rice water.
Guilian Wan: Treats five-colored dysentery due to Yin deficiency, and anorectic red dysentery in pregnant women.
Remove Ganjiang from Zhuche Wan. The formula uses Ejiao 2 liang, Danggui and Huanglian each 1 liang. Add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, stir-fried until black), each 0.5 liang; Qiai (Artemisia argyi Herba) 1.5 liang.
Except for Ejiao and Aiye, grind the remaining herbs into fine powder. Boil Qiai in 2 sheng of vinegar until reduced to 1 sheng, remove dregs, add Ejiao to dissolve, and form pills sized like mung beans. Each dose is 60-70 pills, taken three times a day (day and night), administered with rice water.
Ejiao Meilian Wan: Treats five-colored dysentery due to Yin deficiency with fever worsening at night.
The base formula of Zhuche Wan uses Ejiao and Huanglian each at 3 liang, Danggui 1.5 qian, Paojiang (Processed Zingiberis Rhizoma) 1 liang. Add Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, stir-fried until black), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Hosta, each 1.5 liang); Wumei Rou (Mume Fructus Flesh, stir-fried until charred) 1.5 liang. Dissolve Ejiao in vinegar to form pills, sized like wu-tong seeds. Each dose is 30-50 pills, taken three times a day (day and night), administered with rice water.
Qianjin Huanglian Tang: Treats red and white dysentery.
The base formula of Zhuche Wan uses Ejiao 3 qian, Huanglian and Danggui each 1.5 qian, Paojiang 1 qian. Add Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, processed until black), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) each 1 qian; Suan Shiliupi (Punica Granati Pericarpium) 1.5 qian. Except for Ejiao, decoct the other ingredients in water, remove dregs, add Ejiao to dissolve, and take warm in three divided doses.
