Ding (Changshu, 24 years old) The laborious cough with alternating chills and fever is caused by the long-term deficiency of Yuan Qi (Original Qi) and Yin Qi in the interstices of all meridians. Purely using herbs to fill and essence marrow still risks failing to nourish muscles, leading to a daily decline into emaciation. The patient stated that the physician used Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Wood), causing the voice to gradually become hoarse (Aromatic and drying herbs are strictly contraindicated for laborious cough). Generally speaking, aromatic scents are like smoke and clouds, rising first then descending; moreover, all aromatic herbs dissipate Qi. Chen Xiang enters the Shaoyin Kidney meridian, promoting dispersion and drainage, which is especially contraindicated for cases of consumption and weakness.
Cornus officinalis Fruit (Shanzhuyu), Chinese Yam (Shanyao), Jian Lotus Seed (Jianlian), Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi), Poria Cocos with Hostwood (Fushen), Charred Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shuditan), Euryale Seed (Qianshi), Dendrobium Stem (Chuanhu).
Gu (Jiashan, 48 years old) During May and June, the climate is warm and humid, and the pathogenic factors of the Six Qi are prevalent, with damp-heat being particularly strong at this time. Dampness injures Qi, and heat also injures Qi. When pathogens enter the Qi level but have not yet reached the Blood level, urticaria (wind rash) with itching appears, remaining white in color; this is damp-pathogen stagnation and obstruction in the Qi level (Clearly distinguishing between Qi level and Blood level is an excellent method for teaching students how to diagnose). The patient reported that sweating or eating causes the rash to reappear immediately. The pathogen remains in the Yangming channel. Yangming governs the muscles. The physician misdiagnosed it as Wind and used dispersing herbs without distinguishing between Qi and Blood levels, causing the pathogen to mix into the Blood level. The rash turned red, indicating that the pathogen has penetrated one layer deeper than the initial infection.
Calcined Talcum (Feihuashi), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), Purple Flower Violet Herb (Zihuadiding), Cold Water Stone (Hanshuishi), Phellodendron Bark (Baixianpi), Triangular Sesame (Sanjiao Huma), Raw and Dry Polygonum Multiflorum Root (Sheng Gan Shouwu), Ephedra Root Alternative / Stephania Tetrandra (Mufangji).
Wang (Huai'an, 29 years old) He usually enjoys drinking alcohol, damaging his Spleen Qi. After getting drunk, he suffers from loose stools. Alcohol's nature is damp and moves Blood; accumulated dampness inevitably injures the Yang Qi of the Spleen and Stomach. Three years of blood loss, significantly reduced food intake, and hating alcohol like an enemy are all due to the Spleen and Stomach being trapped (Injury to the Middle Jiao due to excessive drinking leads to blood disorders; awakening Spleen Yang and tonifying the Middle is urgent. Those who enjoy drinking often suffer from this disease). Secular physicians, seeing blood and cough, employ methods of nourishing Yin, descending fire, and clearing the Lungs. Nourishing Yin herbs are necessarily cloying and greasy, while clearing heat herbs are cold and damaging. Thus, Middle Yang remains trapped and unable to revive, falling into consumption.
The Central Spleen and Stomach are trapped by wine-dampness, extremely exhausted, to the point of hating alcohol like an enemy. The decay of Middle Qi is nowhere more severe than this. Apart from Yigong San (Extraordinary Power Powder), there is no other good method. Taking large amounts of Ginseng Root (Renshen) may be beneficial. Those who enjoy drinking are everywhere; one must take this as a warning.
Fan (Huzhou, 25 years old) His complexion is yellow and thin, with epigastric pain and hemoptysis (coughing up blood). Inquiry revealed that his appetite decreased by seven-tenths compared to usual. From early spring until Frost Descent, he could not recover. This is internal damage from the Seven Emotions, resulting in lingering consumption and weakness. If one does not support the Spleen and Stomach but only treats the cough and hemoptysis, it will likely be incurable (This prescription has strength).
