(Xiao Mai / Common Wheat) Is incompatible with Han Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) and Luobo (Raphani Fructus).
Sweet, slightly cold. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Nourishes the Heart and tonifies the Spleen, assists the Five Zang Organs, and thickens the intestines and stomach. Eliminates irritability, thirst, and dryness of the throat; stops hematemesis and metrorrhagia. Promotes urination, consolidates deficiency sweating. Treats insomnia due to Heart heat, and bone-steaming tidal fever due to Yin deficiency. Applied externally for carbuncles, swellings, and trauma. Combined with Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), treats the five types of strangury (Wu Lin). Mixed with Haizao (Sargassum), dissipates goiter (Ying Liu). Lightly stir-fried, ground into fine powder, and taken mixed with Jingmo juice or Oujie juice to stop internal injury-induced hematemesis.
Xin Mai (New Wheat) is hot in nature, while Chen Mai (Aged Wheat) is neutral. Those produced in northern regions are superior. Removing the bran makes it warm; it tonifies deficiency and nourishes Qi. Using it with the bran eliminates irritability and heat. Stir-fried and ground, it treats diarrhea and dysentery. Xin Mai should not be used (as it stagnates Qi and aids damp-heat).
Fu Xiao Mai (Floating Wheat)
Sweet, cool. Obtained by washing wheat in water until the light grains float. Used after roasting.
Sweet, cool. Eliminates bone-steaming deficiency heat, stops spontaneous sweating and night sweats.
Fupi (Bran)
Sweet, cool. Enters the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Clears heat, harmonizes the middle jiao and promotes digestion, stops dysentery and pain, disperses blood stasis. Combined with Muli (Ostrea Shell), stops postpartum deficiency sweating. Stir-fried with vinegar until hot, applied as a compress for pain caused by qi deviation, and for contusions and traumatic injuries.
Xiao Fen (Wheat Starch)
Sweet, cool. Enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Harmonizes the Five Zang Organs, regulates the collaterals. Boiled with rice vinegar into a paste, spread on paper with a hole cut out, and applied to unruptured carbuncles and swellings yields miraculous effects. (The starch must first be stir-fried until yellow, then vinegar is added for boiling.)
It easily causes stagnation in the chest and diaphragm; it should be combined with herbs that promote qi movement. Aged Xiao Fen from previous years is better; the longer it is stored, the better.
Maimiao (Wheat Sprouts)
Pungent, cold. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian. Resolves seasonal epidemics, eliminates irritability, clears heat from the diaphragm, and removes jaundice due to alcohol consumption (Jiu Dan).
Mai Nu (Wheat Mildew)
Pungent, cold. Enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Treats Yang Du (Yang Toxin) and Wen Du (Warm Toxin), excessive heat with thirst, mania, restlessness, and Wen Nue (Warm Malaria).
When the wheat ears are nearly ripe, those covered with black mildew are called Mai Nu.
Shi Mi (Rock Sugar) acts as its guiding herb or synergistic partner.

Harmonizes the middle jiao, benefits Qi, cools blood, strengthens the stomach, moistens the skin, and eliminates irritability and thirst. Combined with Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) and Fengmi (Honey), treats sudden onset of painful strangury. Promotes appetite; use after stir-frying.
