It pairs well with Poria (Fuling), Dragon Bone (Longgu), and Okra Seeds (Dongkuizi). It is incompatible with Pearl (Zhenzhu), Cockroach (Feilian), Veratrum (Lilu), and Arca Shell (Qige). It can neutralize the toxicity of Tianxiong, Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi), and Aconite Root (Wutou).
Pungent, bitter, warm. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Opens Heart Qi, expels Heart pathogenic factors, unblocks the nine orifices, and dissipates carbuncles and swellings. Paired with Licorice Root (Gancao) and Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), it treats stagnation in the Spleen Meridian. Combined with Fritillaria Bulb (Chuanbei) and Poria with Hostwood (Fushen), it eliminates Phlegm stagnation and opens the Heart orifice. Assisted by Poria (Fuling), it enters the Kidney Meridian to drain pathogenic factors. Assisted by Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), it disperses Heart stagnation to calm the Spirit. (If there are no pathogenic factors, it will scatter the healthy Qi of the Heart.) Ground into powder and insufflated into the nose, it treats headache caused by Brain Wind.
Soak in rice-washing water, crush, and remove the heart/core; if the core is not removed, it causes suffocation and chest oppression. Then soak in Licorice decoction overnight, drain, and dry in the sun or bake before use. Raw use irritates the throat. Contraindicated for Heart deficiency insomnia (use may cause palpitations). Contraindicated for Kidney Qi deficiency (use may excessively lift Kidney Qi). Both conditions are strictly prohibited. Currently, everyone considers Zhiyuan as a formula for tonifying the Heart and calming the Spirit, but in reality, it dissipates the Qi of the Heart and Kidney. Once the Heart and Kidney are deficient, it stirs up the Fire of Dragon and Thunder (hyperactive ministerial fire from the lower jiao) without restraint; those who are weak and fearful must absolutely avoid it. It is only suitable for cases where Heart Qi is stagnant, Phlegm-saliva obstructs the Heart orifice, leading to symptoms such as mental dullness, amnesia, and restless sleep, to resolve Phlegm and promote Qi flow. To claim that it benefits essence, strengthens will, and ensures close interaction between Heart and Kidney is absolutely impossible. Observing Zhang Jingyue's (courtesy name Zhongchun) discussion in *Bencao Jing Shu* and Jiuru's modifications, one can naturally understand the errors of the past.
That is, the seedling of Zhiyuan.
Removes heat stagnation in the blood, disperses Wind stagnation in the Shaoyin meridian. Used to induce eruption when measles/rubella heat fails to rise.
Also known as Yin Yang Huo.
Pairs well with wine. Dioscorea Rhizome (Shuyu) and Purple Reishi (Zizhi) act as guides.
Pungent, warm. Enters the Qi level of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, and concurrently enters the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, Sanjiao, and Mingmen. Assists Ministerial Fire, strengthens essence and Qi, dispels wind-cold, resolves spasms and contractures.
Paired with Raspberry (Fupenzi) and Schisandra Berry (Beiwei), it treats cold cough of the Sanjiao. Combined with Clematis Root (Weilingxian), it treats measles/rubella entering the eyes. With Ginger (Shengjiang) and Tea Leaves (Chaye) as chief ingredients, it treats abdominal distension and anorexia. Soaked in pure wine (without ash), it treats hemiplegia with numbness.
Remove flower branches, wash clean, grind into fine powder. For every jin (500g) of herb, mix-fry with 4 liang of Mutton Fat until the fat is fully absorbed. Strictly contraindicated to be used together with Morinda Root (Bajitian).
Morinda Root (Bajitian), Cynomorium Herb (Suoyang), Curculigo Rhizome (Xianmao), and Epimedium Herba (Yinyanghuo) must all be soaked thoroughly in Rehmannia Juice (Shengdi juice), then baked dry. Furthermore, heavily use yin-nourishing agents to restrain their heat, thus avoiding the hazard of excessive Yang and deficient Yin. Nowadays, people often treat these as excellent prescriptions for fertility; those who take them often suffer from hyperactive Yang and exhausted Yin, dried-up essence and fluids, thereby harming themselves. This is indeed being deeply deluded.
