Also known as Cao Jue Ming.
Bitter in flavor, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Hand Shaoyin (Heart) and Foot Jueyin (Liver) meridians. Clears the liver fire that rushes upward and dispels pathogenic heat from the Heart meridian. It is applicable for treating wind-dampness of the skin and visual obstructions such as nebulae or cataracts (Yi Zhang). Contraindicated for those with dilated pupils (as it may disperse Yin Qi). For strange symptoms: seeing insects flying before the eyes, but grasping with hands reveals nothing; this is a disease of the Liver meridian. Use Qingxiangzi combined with Yuanmingfen (refined Mirabilite), Qianghuo, and Zaoren ground into powder, taken orally with water.
Sweet in flavor, cool in nature. Enters the Blood level. Treats hemorrhoids with bleeding, dysentery with red and white discharge, metrorrhagia (Beng Lou), and leukorrhea. Combined with Chun Gen Bai Pi (Cortex Ailanthi Alangi Radicis), it treats Ji Yin Bian Xue (hematochezia due to internal injury of Yin collaterals). Paired with Fang Feng, it treats lower body bleeding with rectal prolapse. Added to Ku Jiu (vinegar), it treats incessant hematemesis. Decocted with Huang Jiu (yellow wine), it treats leukorrhea. Differentiate between red and white types and use stir-fried forms accordingly.
Benefits greatly from wine preparation.
Pungent, sweet, and bitter in flavor, warm in nature. Enters the Blood level of the Hand Shaoyin (Heart) and Foot Jueyin (Liver) meridians. Breaks up blood stasis, promotes the circulation of fresh blood, dissipates swelling, and relieves pain. (When blood circulates freely, pain naturally ceases.) Paired with Dang Gui, it invigorates blood. Paired with Rou Gui, it disperses stasis. To break blood stasis, use a larger dose decocted in wine; to nourish blood, use a smaller dose decocted in water. Postpartum patients should avoid excessive use to prevent fatal hemorrhage. Seeds: Swallow several seeds to prevent chickenpox lesions from affecting the eyes. For blackened and sunken pox lesions, soak the seeds in wine, dry them, stir-fry lightly, and grind for use.
This refers to preparations made from Hong Hua Zhi (Safflower juice).
Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature. Invigorates blood. When pox are about to erupt, apply this around the eyes to prevent pox toxins from entering the eyes. Also resolves Ding Du (carbuncle toxicity). Paired with Ge Fen (concha arcae), applied externally for cracked nipples.
Sweet in flavor, cool in nature. Breaks blood stasis, reduces fever, and dissipates abscesses. Treats persistent spotting and metrorrhagia (Beng Zhong), and removes venom from spider or scorpion bites. Combined with wine, it treats bleeding from the nine orifices. Paired with Xiao Ji, it treats metrorrhagia. (Blood stasis causes erratic bleeding.)
Has cooling blood properties. Most suitable for women with pox/rash conditions or irregular menstrual bleeding.
Leaves: Treats carbuncles and swellings. (Da Ji Ye reduces swelling, Xiao Ji Ye promotes blood circulation.)
Crushed and juiced, mixed with Tong Bian (urine of a healthy young boy) and wine for oral consumption.
Di Huang acts as its Shi (guide drug). Adversely affected by Lei Wan.
Bitter and pungent in flavor, slightly warm and slightly astringent in nature. Enters the Qi level of the Foot Jueyin (Liver) meridian. Unblocks blood vessels, regulates sinews and bones, soothes Liver Qi, and benefits joints. For all conditions including metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, traumatic injuries with fractures, toxic sores, and bloody dysentery, only this herb can be used to ensure smooth flow of Qi and Blood, leading to self-healing. Paired with Du Zhong, it treats fetal leakage. Assisted by Ren Shen, it supports Spleen Qi. Remove stems and tendons, soak in wine, and stir-fry. Used raw in formulas for metrorrhagia and traumatic injuries. Note: Cao Mao Gen has a similar appearance; accidental ingestion causes softening of sinews and bones. Do not use in early-stage dysentery. (Its nature is draining yet tonifying.) Contraindicated for those with Qi stagnation due to anger. (Due to its warm nature.)
