小儿中马毒客忤:烧马尾烟于前,每日熏之,瘥乃止。(《圣惠方》)
Poisoned by Lacquer: A prefect used raw lacquer to smear a prisoner's eyes, causing immediate blindness. A village official happened to see this and felt pity, saying to the prisoner, "Hurry and find a crab, crush it to extract the juice, and drip it into your eyes; the lacquer will disperse with the juice." The prisoner followed this advice, found a small crab, and used it. His eyes indeed healed without any damage. (Jingyue Quanshu)
Poisoned by Mercury: If mercury accidentally enters powdered medicine and penetrates the muscle, it can damage bones and tendons. Rubbing the affected area with a gold instrument until the gold turns white will cure it. (Yiliang Li Shi Kan Fang)
Poisoned by Bowl Silk: Accidentally swallowing silk from the rim of a bowl during meals causes throat pain and swelling within moments. Lighting hemp and inhaling the smoke as if using a smoking pipe can detoxify it. (Ibid.)
Poisoned by Medicinal Arrow Poison: Applying realgar powder to the wound and inducing profuse sweating cures it. (Waitai Miyao)
Yao Sengtan said: There are three types of medicinal arrows. In Jiaozhou and Guangzhou, barbarians use scorched copper for arrowheads. In areas north of the mountains, snake venom is collected in tubes to soak arrowheads; these are the first two types. Once the skin is penetrated, rapid suppuration and rotting lead to death. If poisoned, drinking fecal juice and applying it to the wound is most effective. Another type uses *Urtica ferox* (She Wang) decoction applied to arrowheads, which also responds to this formula. (Jiyan Liangfang)
Poisoned by Coal Fumes: Sudden loss of consciousness due to bad luck can be treated by crushing radish to extract juice, instilling it into the mouth and nose, and moving the patient to a windy place to regain consciousness. (Tang Yao Jingyan Fang)
Hu Jitang said: Coal poisoning occurs when foul air leaks from earthen pits. Victims suffer from fumes and die unknowingly; their bodies become soft and injured, resembling sleep paralysis where one cannot wake up. Placing a basin of water in the room and ensuring windows have ventilation prevents harm even if coal smells bad. (Jijiu Fang)
Poisoned by Calomel (Light Mercuric Chloride): Interceder (*Guanzhong*) and Coptis (*Huanglian*), each 5 qian, decocted in water with a little borneol added. Rinse mouth frequently. (Lu Shi Jide Tang Fang)
Another prescription: Dilute aged soy sauce with water and rinse mouth frequently. (Ji Jian Fang)
Poisoned by Sichuan Pepper: Inhaling smoke from burning chicken feathers cures it. (Qianjin Fang)
Poisoned by Water Poison: Initial symptoms include aversion to cold, slight headache and eye pain, worsening at night, and cold extremities. After three days, worms may erode the lower body; after six or seven days, toxins reach the five zang organs causing death. Applying indigo juice to the entire head and body, or using dandelion juice soaked in cotton to guide treatment to the lower part, is effective. (Jintai Lu Shi)
Another prescription: Boil 3 sheng of small garlic until slightly warm (if too hot, it lacks efficacy for bathing). If red rashes appear on the body, do not treat as other diseases. (Zhouhou Fang)
Poisoned by Sand Lice: Sand lice live in water and attach to humans during bathing, burrowing into the skin. Initially, red spots like mung beans appear on the skin, painful when rubbed. After three days, chills, fever, and sores develop; if entering bones, it is fatal. Common in Lingnan. Scraping off with bamboo leaves and applying bitter vegetable juice is best. (Ibid.)
Poisoned by Archer Fish Stream Poison: Grinding mustard seeds into powder and mixing with wine, applied thickly for half a day, stops pain. (Qianjin Yi)
Poisoned by Earwig Urine: Draw an earwig shape on the ground, carefully dig soil from its belly with a knife, and apply twice to cure. Sun Simiao said: I suffered from this for five or six days without relief. Someone taught me this method, and I recovered. Thus, I know all things interact, though I do not understand why. (Ibid.)
Another prescription: For cases encircling the waist, decocting Patrinia (*Baijiang*) and applying the juice is good. (Yang Shi Chan Ru)
Poisoned by Centipede: Symptoms include tongue swelling extending to the anus. Prick a rooster's comb for blood, soak the tongue, and swallow. (Qingnang Zazu)
Appendix: Removing Centipedes: To keep centipedes away, burn hair to produce smoke in corners, under beds, or in kitchens; they will burrow three chi deep upon smelling it. (Qifang Leibian)
Poisoned by Snail: If toxicity spreads over the whole body, soaking in *Polygonum* (*Liaozi*) decoction cures it immediately. Avoid contact with the genital area to prevent weakness. (Chen Cangqi Bencao)
Poisoned by Mole Cricket: Mixing vinegar with calcined alum (*Duanshi*) and applying it cures it. (Shenghui Fang)
Poisoned by Earthworm: Symptoms resemble leprosy, with loss of eyebrows and beard. Soaking in concentrated salt water broth several times cures it. For children, washing with warm salt water or applying duck blood leads to self-healing. (Danfang Zhaiyao)
Another prescription: Soaking in calcined alum water is best. (Shao Zhenren Jingyan Fang)
Poisoned by Yellow Flies: In Wumeng Mountain gorges, small yellow flies carry toxic scales. Bites are initially unnoticed but gradually cause wasting and sores. Do not scratch; wash with cold water and rub with a little salt to prevent harm. (Fangyu Shenglan)
Poisoned by Golden Silkworm: Powder 3 qian of Polyporus (*Leiyuan*), mix with a little alum. When the golden silkworm appears, sprinkle powder on it; it instantly turns into red blood-like water. (Shishi Milu)
*Tiewei Shan Congshuo* states: Golden silkworms originated in Shu and spread to Huguang, Fujian, and Guangdong. People discard them, calling it "marrying off the golden silkworm," usually leaving gold hairpins or silk on roads for others to take. The Prefect of Yulin told me: He saw a lawsuit in Fuqing County regarding golden silkworm poisoning. The magistrate sought a cure but found no trace. Someone suggested placing two hedgehogs in the house; since golden silkworms fear hedgehogs, they hide under beds. Indeed, they were caught by hedgehogs. This trend has subsided recently, but poison still exists in Nanning barbarian caves. Recorded here for travelers' reference. (Duan Suzhai Zazhui)
Poisoned by Various Gu Poisons: Bleeding like chicken liver day and night, organ decay, awaiting death. Place lotus leaves under the patient's mat without letting them know; they will inevitably call out the name of the Gu master. (Mei Shi Fang)
Appendix: Theory of Gu Poison: Rare in central China. Legend says people in deep mountains of Yunnan and Guangdong gather venomous snakes, centipedes, and toads in a vessel on Dragon Boat Festival Day, allowing them to eat each other until one survives, which becomes the Gu, also called Taosheng. To harm someone, secretly place Gu in food/drink. Victims suffer heart/abdominal pain as if bitten by insects, vomiting and diarrhea of rotten絮 material. Without urgent treatment, Gu eats the five zang organs leading to death within ten days or years, causing emaciation. (Jingyue Quanshu)
Appendix: Testing for Gu Poison: Regardless of time elapsed, boil a duck egg, insert a silver hairpin, and hold it in the mouth. After about one mealtime, remove and check; if both pin and egg turn black, it indicates Gu poisoning. (Qifang Zuanyao)
Appendix: Preventing Gu Poison: Upon entering Gu-infested regions, stir food/drink with rhinoceros horn. Toxic substances raise white foam; absence of foam means no poison. (Yang Shi Nanxing Fang)
Appendix: Counter-Gu and Master Method: In Gu villages, homes with absolutely clean doorsteps and beams likely keep Gu; beware. If forced to eat their food, hide a piece in hand while eating. Later, bury the hidden item at a crossroad. The Gu spirit will return to harass the owner, who will beg for mercy. Alternatively, let the host eat first, or ask directly if there is Gu, tapping the table with chopsticks before eating. These methods prevent Gu harm, verified in Gu villages. (Weisheng Baojian)
Injured by Stripping Horse: If pierced by bone splinters near death, crush horse intestinal millet droppings and apply; wash with urine for great effect. (Bencao Gangmu)
Poisoned by Eating Horse Meat: Decocting reed root juice and bathing in it resolves poisoning. (Jianyi Liangfang)
Children Poisoned by Horse Evil Qi: Burning horse tail hair to produce smoke and fumigating daily cures it. (Shenghui Fang)
