The "Xu" (oo) sound belongs to the Liver, and the Liver Spirit governs the eyes. If red pterygium (pterygium), blurred vision, and tearing like crying occur, these are caused by Liver Heat Qi rushing upward; practicing the "Xu" sound for regulation is the most rapid and effective method.
The "He" (uh) sound belongs to the Heart, and the Heart Spirit governs the tongue. If one feels dryness and astringency in the mouth and frequent body heat, one should practice the "He" sound according to the depth of the illness, and diseases in the Upper Jiao will naturally dissipate.
The "Si" (si) sound method is spiritual and effective, but must be kept secret. Externally it relates to the nasal root, and internally connects to the Lungs. For conditions such as cold and heat, consumptive fatigue, chest oppression, and skin sores, this breathing technique is invariably beneficial.
The "Chui" (chway) sound belongs to the Kidneys, and the Kidneys govern the ears. For symptoms such as coldness and soreness in the lower back and knees, and impotence (weakness of sexual function), one should gently exhale while articulating the "Chui" sound; there is no need to seek external medicines.
The "Xi" (shee) sound belongs to the Sanjiao (Triple Burner). Illnesses arising from the Sanjiao involve all disharmonious Qi; if this disharmonious Qi damages the Sanjiao, simply practicing the "Xi" sound allows for self-regulation and recovery.
The "Hu" (hoo) sound belongs to the Spleen, and the Spleen Spirit governs the Earth element. If one experiences vexing heat, abdominal distension like a drum, and four limbs feeling congested and stifled with difficult Qi circulation, practicing the "Hu" sound restores the body to its original state.
In spring, "Xu" brightens the eyes and supports the Liver with Wood Qi; at Summer Solstice, "He" calms the Heart Fire naturally; in autumn, "Si" gathers Metal Qi to moisten the Lungs; in winter, "Chui" ensures peace in the Kan (Kidney/Water); for Sanjiao disorders, "Xi" removes vexing heat; throughout the four seasons, long practice of "Hu" aids the Spleen in digesting food. One must avoid making audible sounds that reach the ears; its efficacy surpasses that of Bao Shen Dan. (From *Yang Sheng Shu*)
Han Hengyang stated in *Zhen Jun Luan Yu*: What Heaven and Earth bestow is Qi; Qi is originally vast and noble, yet what consumes it is speech. What the body utilizes is Shen (Spirit); Shen permeates the whole body, yet what depletes it is thought. What is accumulated since childhood is Jing (Essence); Jing fills the bones and flesh, yet what corrupts it is lust. If one can maintain silence and speak little, reduce thinking, abstain from licentiousness, regulate diet to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach, avoid wind and cold to prevent common colds, and regularly exert physical strength to toil the sinews and bones, then not only can diseases be repelled, but longevity can also be achieved. (From *Xing Meng Chen Zhong*)
Gen Hexagram (meaning Stop): The gentleman reflects that his thoughts should not exceed his proper position (this is the method for regulating the Heart). The function of the Heart organ is thinking; excessive thinking injures the Heart. By applying "Stopping," one adapts to circumstances and finds contentment everywhere. Its efficacy surpasses Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan.
Sun Hexagram (meaning Decrease): The gentleman reflects on punishing anger and stifling desires (this is the method for regulating the Liver and Kidneys). Excessive anger injures the Liver; excessive desire injures the Kidneys. Knowing how to decrease and reflect upon them, and thus punishing and stifling them, prevents Liver Fire from moving recklessly and allows Kidney Water to gradually nourish. Its efficacy surpasses Shu Gan Yi Shen Wan.
Yi Hexagram (meaning Nourish): The gentleman reflects on being cautious with speech and regulating diet (this is the method for regulating the Lungs and Spleen). Excessive speech injures the Lungs; excessive eating injures the Spleen. Being cautious and regulated in these aspects is what the gentleman relies upon to nourish the body; this preserves Lung Qi and strengthens the Spleen. Its efficacy surpasses Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang.
