(Nine Simple Methods for Treating Malaria)
When a child suffers from malaria, sandalwood and speed incense should be frequently burned to dispel evil pathogens, and the smoke should be used to fumigate the child's clothing and swaddling clothes; this facilitates the elimination of evil pathogens.
In cases of malaria accompanied by thirst, cold water, cold tea, and raw/cold foods must be avoided. Violation of this rule exacerbates the condition; drinking fresh ginger decoction while hot is the most effective remedy.
When the fever of malaria has not completely subsided, food intake must be strictly prohibited. Food can only be resumed after the fever has entirely disappeared; otherwise, it may eventually lead to *pi ji* (abdominal masses).
When administering antimalarial drugs (medicines to stop attacks), one must wait until past the expected time of attack and confirm that no attack occurs before consuming congee. Eating too early will cause the malaria to recur, rendering subsequent antimalarial treatments ineffective.
For children with "evil malaria," where attacks occur at irregular times and dates, varying between early and late, or present intermittently, apply five candareens of musk mixed with high-quality Jing ink to write the characters "Expel Evil and Ward Off Demons" on the forehead; this is effective.
For pediatric heat malaria (fever without chills): Use one tael of pangolin scales and ten large red dates. Burn them together until carbonized but retaining their medicinal properties (*cun xing*), grind into fine powder. Take one qian on the morning of the attack day, administered with plain boiled water.
For malaria characterized by severe chills and mild fever, with loss of appetite: Stir-fry galangal in sesame oil and process dried ginger, using five qian of each. Grind into fine powder. Form pills with pig bile, sized like paulownia seeds. Take two qian with warm wine half an hour before the onset of the attack.
Zhi Mie Dan (Antimalarial Pill)
Raw Pinellia Rhizome (stir-fried with oil) Fritillaria Bulb (two taels each)
Grind into fine powder. Make pills using ginger juice as a binder. Take two qian with plain boiled water at wu geng (approx. 3-5 AM). Alternatively, take two qian with light ginger decoction at the time of impending attack. Continuous administration for three days yields results.
For persistent malaria in children that does not cease: Select large softshell turtle plastron (exclude small ones). Calcine with vinegar until brittle, then grind into extremely fine powder. Administer one qian or one and a half qian once overnight, once in the early morning, and once just before the attack; there are cases that cannot be cured.
(Three Methods)
Thirst with excessive drinking indicates Upper Xiao, caused by Lung Heat: Use three qian each of Asparagus Tuber and Ophiopogon Tuber; one and a half qian each of Trichosanthes Root, Scutellaria Root, Anemarrhena Rhizome, Coptis Rhizome, and Phellodendron Bark.
Thirst with excessive drinking and good appetite indicates Middle Xiao, caused by Stomach Heat: Use three qian each of Rehmannia Root and Ophiopogon Tuber; one and a half qian each of Chinese Yam, Anemarrhena Rhizome, and Moutan Cortex; one qian each of Coptis Rhizome and Phellodendron Bark.
Thirst with turbid and uncontrollable urination indicates Lower Xiao, caused by Kidney Heat: Use Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) plus Ophiopogon Tuber and Schisandra Fruit.
Can Jian Tang (Mulberry Cocoon Decoction) treats all three types of Xiao (Wasting-Thirst).
Use mulberry cocoons, or clumps of silk cotton. Take six qian per dose, add three bowls of water, and decoct until reduced to two bowls. Drink warm frequently as tea. Drinking up to two bowls ensures recovery. Although Xiao presents as excess fire and deficient water, deficiency-heat is more common than excess-heat; do not mistakenly treat it as an excess syndrome. I have discussed this in Internal Medicine.
Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst) involves excessive drinking day and night. Take one pig stomach, wash thoroughly, insert five qian of prepared soybean (Dan Dou Chi), sew shut with cotton thread, and boil until very tender. Drink the broth; the stomach meat may also be eaten. Another method: Boil pig blood in clear soup without salt or oil. Drinking it in abundance is highly effective. Pig blood nourishes yin and descends fire, specifically entering the blood level. For those with Spleen Qi deficiency, drink it every other day to prevent diarrhea.
