Breast milk is transformed from the Qi and Blood of the nursing mother. The moral or immoral states of the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sadness, Fear, Fright) are entirely generated by Qi and Blood; therefore, the mother should abstain from joy and anger, and observe all taboos. One shall not nurse an infant if the person has fox odor, goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland), or coughing diseases, nor if they have body tinea and scabies, head sores, sparse hair, tight lips, hoarseness, deafness, or nasal epilepsy, etc., before it is safe to nurse. During the intense heat of summer, after the mother takes a bath, or when the infant is crying, one must not provide milk, as this will cause heat-toxin in the infant's stomach, leading to dysentery with red and white discharge in autumn. After bathing, one should allow the mother to calm her breathing for a long time before nursing, which is acceptable. Nie said: Do not feed breast milk while the infant is crying violently, for fear that Qi will reverse and become unsmooth, accumulating to form malnutrition syndrome (chronic nutritional disorder in children), which can also cause disease. The *Qianjin Fang* discusses: When nursing an infant, do not overfeed; overfeeding causes overflow and vomiting. If the milk flow is abundant and forceful, express some out first before letting the infant suckle. It is crucial that before nursing, the mother should first express and discard some old milk (retained hot milk). If the nursing mother wishes to lie down and sleep, she should use her arm as a pillow to keep the breast level with the infant's head. When the mother feels sleepy, immediately remove the breast, for fear the infant does not know satiety and continues to eat, causing vomiting. During sexual intercourse between parents, if the infant is lying nearby or starts up in fright, do not nurse the infant. Because the Qi is chaotic and unsettled, it will surely harm the infant. (*Yunji Qiqian* states: Nursing after drunken intercourse can kill the infant. *Shengji Zonglu* discusses: Regarding nursing, in summer, heat is undesirable; heat leads to vomiting and reversal. In winter, cold is undesirable; cold then... The mother should not be angry, for anger causes upward Qi and mania; the mother should not be drunk, for drunkenness causes body heat and abdominal fullness. Nursing after recent vomiting or purging leads to deficiency; nursing with accumulated heat transforms into jaundice and inability to eat. Nursing after recent coitus leads to emaciation, wasting, and inability to walk with crossed legs.)
Qian Yi stated: Infants often suffer from excessive care; if they are not eating solid foods at two or three years of age, it results in Spleen and Stomach weakness and frequent illness throughout life. For infants after six months, thin rice gruel should be decocted and given occasionally. After ten months, thicker gruel and soft rice should be gradually introduced to assist Middle Qi (Spleen and Stomach Qi), making them naturally easier to raise and less prone to illness. Only raw/cold, greasy, and sweet foods are taboo. (*Youyou Xinshu* citing *Baojian* states: At fifty days, food like a date pit can be offered; at one hundred days, like a small ball, twice morning and evening. Under three years old, chicken meat and eggs should not be eaten, for fear of generating parasites.)
