This is the most exquisite formula for arresting malaria. If excessive sweating has depleted the primordial qi, preventing its recovery, or if the malaria persists due to advanced age and frailty, or a weak constitution, this formula is suitable for all such cases. It is the premier formula for resolving acute conditions and managing convalescence.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) [each 3-4 qian], He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Preparata Radix) [5 qian, processed], Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) [8 fen]. Use one cup of Yin-Yang water (a mixture of freshly drawn well water and rainwater or river water) and one cup of Yang water, decoct until one cup remains, remove the dregs, and take orally. If there is Kidney Yang deficiency, add Zhi Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root); if there are signs of heat, add Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix). If Bai Zhu and Gan Cao are omitted and Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) are added, it is named He Ren Yin (He Ren Decoction), with identical indications.
(Zhang Zhongjing) In the treatment of Shang Han (Cold Damage), after administering herbal decoctions, persistent diarrhea occurs accompanied by epigastric fullness and hardness. After taking Xie Xin Tang (Drain the Epigastrium Decoction), further purgatives were incorrectly administered. (The above describes errors in secondary treatment.) The physician then administered Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction), resulting in worsened diarrhea. (This indicates further mismanagement.) Li Zhong Tang regulates the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner). For disorders of the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner), Chi Shi Zhi Yu Liang Tang (Red Halloysite and Hematite Decoction) should be used as the primary treatment. If diarrhea persists despite this, promoting urination should be attempted. (*Nan Jing* states: The Zhong Wan point of the Middle Jiao governs... The Lower Jiao is located at the opening of the bladder, governing the separation of clear and turbid substances, primarily expelling waste without reabsorption, thereby facilitating transmission. *Ling Shu* states: Food and drink enter the Middle Jiao, transform into residue, and descend together into the large and small intestines. This forms the Lower Jiao, where fluids are filtered and descend together, separating juices, circulating through the Lower Jiao, and seeping into the bladder. If pathology lies in the Lower Jiao, it is because the bladder fails to filter, leading to Lower Jiao sliding and loss of control. Yu Liang (Hematite) is sweet and neutral, capable of dissipating fullness and stabilizing the zang-fu organs. Chi Shi Zhi (Red Halloysite) is sweet and warm, capable of astringing sliding loss. If diarrhea still does not cease, it is because the bladder fails to filter, resulting in the failure to distinguish between water and grain. Promoting urination guides the water out, dispersing and eliminating it, allowing the bladder to perform its proper function.)
Chi Shi Zhi (Red Halloysite) [1 jin, crushed], Yu Liang (Hematite) [1 jin, crushed]. Add 6 sheng of water, boil to obtain 2 sheng, remove dregs, and divide into three doses.
Astringents can resolve sliding loss; heavy substances can reach the lower body. These two herbs use their astringent properties to stop sliding loss, their heaviness to secure the lower jiao, and their sweetness to benefit qi. (Li Xianzhi stated: When pathology exists in the Lower Jiao... it is difficult to comprehend.)
