(Li Dongyuan) Treats internal injury of the Spleen and Stomach, characterized by blacking out of the eyes, dizziness (Xuanxuan), severe headache as if splitting, and a heavy body as if carrying a mountain. Nausea, restlessness, and cold extremities.
This is Phlegm-Jue Headache of the Foot-Taiyin Meridian. (Phlegm-Jue refers to the condition generated by damp-phlegm causing Jue-reversal. When phlegm rebels upward, it creates excess in the upper part, thus causing headache, dizziness, and blacking out of the eyes.)
Li Dongyuan stated: Taiyin headache must involve phlegm. Shaoyin headache presents with cold feet and rebellious Qi. The Taiyin and Shaoyin meridians... [Text fragment] ...Phlegm and rebellious Qi obstruct the middle Jiao (Diaphragm), preventing the Qi in the head from flowing freely, resulting in pain.)
Banxia (Ginger-processed) Maiya (1.5 qian) Shenqu (Stir-fried) Baizhu (Stir-fried, 1 qian) Cangzhu (Soaked in rice wash water) Renshen Huangqi (Honey-roasted) Chenpi ... 5 qian.
For Phlegm-Jue headache, only Banxia can eliminate it. (Banxia dries phlegm and harmonizes the Stomach.) For dizziness and blacking out of the eyes, caused by internal deficiency-wind, only Tianma can settle it.
[Regarding Six Meridian Headaches:]
Taiyang headache involves aversion to wind and cold, with a floating-tight pulse; main herbs include Chuanxiong, Qianghuo, Duhuo, and Mahuang.
Shaoyang headache features a wiry-thin pulse and alternating chills and fever; main herbs are Chaihu and Huangqin.
Yangming headache presents with spontaneous sweating, fever, aversion to cold, and a floating-slow-long-excess pulse; main herbs are Shengma, Gegen, Baizhi, and Shigao.
Taiyin headache necessarily involves phlegm, heaviness of the body or abdominal pain, known as Tanpi (phlegm-stasis); pulse is deep-slow; main herbs are Cangzhu, Banxia, and Nanxing.
Shaoyin headache involves stagnation of Qi in the Three Yin and Three Yang meridians, cold feet and rebellious Qi, constituting Cold-Jue; pulse is deep-thin; treated with Mahuang Fuzi Xixin Tang.
Jueyin headache extends to the neck, possibly with spitting of saliva/froth, cold limbs, and a floating-slow pulse; treated with Wuzhuyu Tang.
Blood-deficiency headache is primarily treated with Danggui and Chuanxiong.
Qi-deficiency headache is primarily treated with Renshen and Huangqi.
Headache due to combined Qi and Blood deficiency is treated with Tiaozhong Yiqi Tang, with small additions of Chuanxiong, Manjingzi, and Xixin.
Qingkong Gao is a formula for Wind-Damp headache.
Baizhu Banxia Tianma Tang is a formula for Phlegm-Jue headache.
Qianghuo Fuzi Tang is a formula for Jue-reversal headache.
If dampness resides in the head, bitter-emetics should be used; one must not rigidly adhere to a single formula. Note: Bitter emetics refer to such things as Guiti San or strong tea. Alternatively, using nasal insufflation to remove yellow fluid from the nose is also an effective method for treating dampness in the head.)
