(The formula is described in Volume I, Upper Section, Gate of Treatment.) When added with ginger juice and bamboo sap, it treats sudden death accompanied by phlegm rales in the throat, a condition known as Phlegm Jue (Phlegm Syncope). (If the phlegm sound is gurgling and worsens gradually with respiration to a severe degree, it indicates that Qi has collapsed; this is incurable.)
Phlegm Jue occurs when stubborn phlegm obstructs the respiratory pathway of Clear Yang. Since the phlegm blocks the airway, Qi attempts to penetrate the obstruction to restore flow, causing sounds in the throat. The Classics state: "In robust individuals, Qi moves freely..."
If one suddenly faints and falls while walking or standing, without phlegm sounds in the throat and without pathogenic heat in the body, it is due to Yin deficiency causing a sudden severance of Yang. This formula is indicated for such cases.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 2 liang (remove the rhizome), decocted and taken.
Yin and Yang in the human body are mutually rooted and inseparable. If Yin fluids are deficient and lacking, isolated Yang loses its foundation and attachment, leading to its erratic flight and dispersion, thereby causing... [The original text here appears fragmented or corrupted, likely implying severe consequences like Qi collapse or sudden death based on context].
It treats sudden death caused by violent anger, known as Qi Jue (Qi Syncope). (Support the patient into a sitting position so that smooth Qi flow brings slight relief. Then, blow powder made from Gao Jiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Spina) into the nasal cavity to induce sneezing.)
This formula is found in the Appendix Formulas of the Gate of Treatment in Volume I, Upper Section, under Si Mo Yin (Four-Step Decoction).
Anger causes Qi to ascend. When Qi ascends, Qi in the Upper Jiao becomes excessive and stagnant, failing to descend, while Qi in the Lower Jiao rebels and fails to inhale, leading to sudden death. For ascending Qi, descending methods should be used; thus, Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Lignum) and Bing Lang (Arecae Semen) are employed... [The original text here is syntactically broken, but the intent is to use sinking/descending herbs to lower Qi].
Those who suddenly collapse and die after being exposed to foul odors or miasmic toxins are said to have Zhong E (Poisoning by Evil Miasma). If not treated promptly, death ensues. It is appropriate to burn a scoop of charcoal and pour vinegar over it, allowing the patient to inhale the vinegar vapor... (Vinegar vapor awakens the spirit and dispels turbidity).
Symptoms include abdominal pain, a dark/blackish hue on the forehead, contraction and pulling of the hands and feet, a deep and submerged pulse, and an inability to breathe due to lack of Qi. This is sudden death due to Middle Cold. (Abdominal pain has various etiologies. However, the presence of a black forehead, contracted limbs, and a deep pulse serves as verification of Middle Cold. The reason for the inability to breathe is that exhalation belongs to Yang and inhalation to Yin. When the Three Yin meridians are invaded by True Cold, the pathology prevents inhalation. If inhalation ceases, exhalation cannot exist independently, leading to sudden death.) In such cases, this formula... [Other formulas such as Jiang Fu Bai Tong Tang (Ginger, Aconite, and White Cinnamon Decoction) and Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) may be considered for use.]
This formula is found in the Appendix Formulas of the Dispel Cold Gate in Volume VI, Lower Section, under Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction).
Cold syndromes are treated with warmth; therefore, Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) are used. Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) are used to generate the Qi of respiration (by tonifying Spleen and Stomach to produce Qi). After administering the medicine, moxibustion should be applied to Guan Yuan (CV4)... [The original text ends abruptly with "Winter Death," which seems to be a corruption or fragment, possibly referring to prognosis or seasonal contraindications].
