(Zhang Zhongjing) Treats Taiyang disease (disease of the Taiyang channel) where the Yang pulse is choppy and the Yin pulse is string-taut, accompanied by acute pain in the abdomen. (When pathogenic factors enter the interior and contend with healthy Qi, abdominal pain occurs. A choppy pulse indicates insufficiency of Blood. A string-taut pulse indicates Wood overacting on Earth. Taiyang disease remains at the exterior and does not present with abdominal pain. Shaoyang disease is at the half-exterior and half-interior, presenting with hypochondriac pain but no abdominal pain. Yangming disease presents with abdominal fullness and acute pain due to interior excess; purgation is indicated, using Da Chai Hu Tang or Xiao Cheng Qi Tang. Three Yin diseases presenting with diarrhea and abdominal pain indicate interior cold; warming is indicated, using Si Ni Tang or Fu Zi Li Zhong Tang. Borborygmus, diarrhea, and pain indicate interior deficiency with cold; Xiao Jian Zhong Tang should be used to warm the middle and dissipate cold.) In Taiyang disease, two to three days after onset, palpitations and irritability occur. (Palpitations are due to deficiency of Yang Qi. Irritability is due to deficiency of Yin Blood. With internal deficiency of Qi and Blood, this decoction is used first to establish the interior. Doubling the amount of Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) uses its sour flavor to astringe Yin; when Yin is gathered, Yang returns and attaches. Adding Yi Tang (Maltose) uses its sweet flavor to moisten Spleen Earth; when Earth is moistened, all things grow.) It generally treats Xu Lao (consumptive disease) presenting with palpitations, epistaxis, abdominal urgency and pain, nocturnal emission and loss of essence, soreness and pain of the four limbs, vexing heat in the hands and feet, dry throat and mouth, and Xu Lao Huang Dan (jaundice due to consumptive disease). (In Huang Dan, if urination is free and the urine color is pale white, it indicates absence of heat. Heat-clearing is contraindicated; it should be treated as deficiency-cold. Yu Jiayan stated: In consumptive disease, when blood loss and essence loss have led to exhaustion of essence and blood, it is difficult to exert effort [to cure]. Urgently, one must establish the Middle Zang (Spleen/Stomach), so that food intake increases and Yin Blood flourishes. Therefore, only use flavors sweet like grain cultivation to generate essence and blood. Sour, acrid, and bitter flavors are excluded; apart from this, there is no excellent method.)
Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 3 liang), Shaoyao (White Peony Root, 6 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 liang, honey-fried), Dazao (Jujube, 12 pieces). Add Yi Tang (Maltose) 1 sheng.
