(Zhang Hezi) Treats water hernia (Shuixian) caused by cold-dampness, characterized by swelling of the scrotum. (The scrotal sac is transparent like crystal, with incessant sweating in the genital area, termed water hernia. This is generally due to sexual intercourse after drunkenness, where cold-dampness enters while kidney deficiency exists.) Difficulty in urination and defecation. (Caused by condensation of cold-dampness, leading to failure of qi transformation.)
Black Qian Niu (Semen Kochiae, 4 liang) and Huixiang (Fructus Foeniculi, 1 liang, stir-fried) are ground into powder. Take 1 qian each time, mixed with ginger juice, or add Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 1 liang).
Hei Qianniu is pungent and harsh, capable of reaching the Right Kidney Mingmen Gate. It travels through the spermatic channels, promotes diuresis and expels dampness, and simultaneously treats wind-constipation and qi-constipation of the large intestine. Huixiang is pungent, hot, warm, and dispersing, capable of warming...
(Li Dongyuan) Treats severe constipation, or tenesmus (feeling of incomplete defecation), frequent trips to the toilet without ability to pass stool, or passage of white pus or blood. Caution must be exercised against using purgatives, as this will inevitably lead to severe illness, causing stagnation and obstruction. By using this decoction to raise the Yang, the Yin will naturally descend. (This principle is also applied when treating constipation.)
Cangzhu (Soaked in rice washings, 4 qian) Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 2 qian) Fuling (Poria) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 1 qian). If there is stomach cold with diarrhea and borborygmus, add Yizhi (Fructus Alpiniae Oxyphyllae) and Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae).
Cangzhu is pungent, warm, dry, and harsh; it raises clear Yang and opens various depressions, thus serving as the Sovereign herb. Baizhu is sweet and warm; Fuling is sweet and bland; they serve as Assistant herbs to strengthen the Spleen and promote diuresis to resolve dampness.
Fangfeng... must ascend upward, playing a lifting role.
(From *Ju Fang*) Treats dampness in the exterior, manifesting as headache, heaviness of the head, or heavy pain in the lower back and spine, or generalized body pain, accompanied by slight fever and mental fatigue/drowsiness. (Dampness in the exterior results from external invasion by damp pathogens. When dampness adheres to the Taiyang channel, there is pain in the head, neck, lower back, and spine; when it adheres to the Taiyin channel, there is shoulder and back pain; when it adheres to both Yin and Yang channels, there is generalized pain. Because dampness lingers, the pain is accompanied by a sensation of heaviness. Dampness stagnating transforms into heat, but since dampness is a Yin pathogen, it presents as slight fever and drowsiness. Li Dongyuan stated: Stiffness of the head and neck indicates impaired circulation of Taiyang channel Qi; this decoction treats it.)
Qianghuo (Radix Notopterygii) Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis, 1 qian) Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) Bencao (Rhizoma Ligustici) Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 5 fen) Manjingzi (Fructus Viticis, 3 fen). If there is body heaviness and a sinking sensation in the waist...
The Classics state: Wind can overcome dampness. Qianghuo, Duhuo, Fangfeng, Chuanxiong, and Manjingzi are all wind-dispelling herbs. For dampness in the exterior, these six herbs are pungent, warm, ascending, and dispersing, and are all exterior-resolving agents, enabling... Guan...
If water-dampness is in the interior, one should use formulas that promote urination and leach out dampness. (Yu Jiayan stated: The Classics say, "When dampness is severe in the upper part, it generates heat." Exterior resolution via sweating is easy, whereas downward purging is difficult... Ling Liu... Remove Duhuo, Manjingzi, Chuanxiong, and Gancao, add Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) and Cangzhu, named Qianghuo Chushi Tang (Notopterygium Decoction for Expelling Dampness). Treats rheumatism-wind attacking together, causing generalized body pain. Remove Chuanxiong, add Huang... Danggui...
