Whenever heat toxins, labor fever (fever due to overwork), and various fire pathogens cause extreme heat that cannot be resolved, this prescription is most excellent.
Use mung beans in any quantity, boil them in a large amount of water until they are soft and mushy, add a little salt, or honey may also be used. Wait for it to cool down; whether thick or thin, whether as a decoction, drink it at will.
[Zhi Zhi Fang] Treats damp-heat transforming into fire in the Spleen and Stomach meridians, transmitting to the Large Intestine, causing dysentery with red and white discharge, mixed pus and blood, accompanied by tenesmus (urgency with straining but little passage). (Damp-heat accumulation, stasis affecting the Blood aspect results in redness; stasis affecting the Qi aspect results in whiteness. Red and white mixed indicates both Qi and Blood are diseased. Tenesmus indicates Qi stagnation and obstruction. Note: Tenesmus can be caused by fire-heat, Qi stagnation, food stagnation, Qi deficiency, or Blood deficiency; one must examine the syndrome to determine treatment.)
Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian) (20 taels. Stir-fried together with 10 taels of Evodia Fruit [Wuzhuyu], then discard the Evodia and use only Coptis.) Aromatic Pei Zeia Root (Muxiang) (4 taels 8 qian. Not processed by fire.) Form pills with vinegar paste, take with rice infusion.
Dysentery arises from irregular diet and injury from cold or summer-heat, resulting from steaming and郁 (stagnation) of damp-heat. Coptis is bitter to dry dampness and cold to overcome heat, directly subduing the fire of the Heart and Spleen, thus serving as the Sovereign herb.
Add Lotus Seed Embryo (Shilianrou) to treat anorexic dysentery (Jinkou Li). (Lotus seed embryo clears Heart fire and opens the stomach appetite.) Add Rhubarb (Dahuang) to treat heat-dysentery with stagnation. (Rhubarb drains Stomach heat and sweeps away stagnation.)
Relieves vexatious heat and retreats Yin-fire; this is an excellent formula for generating fluids and quenching thirst. Select fragrant and sweet large pears, peel them. Fill a large bowl with clear, cold spring water, slice the pear thinly, and soak it in the water for a short while. The water will become sweet and delicious; frequently drink this water without eating the residue, which rapidly retreats Yin-fire.
For symptoms such as vexatious heat, mania, restlessness, and vomiting caused by Stomach fire, it can be used with modifications of Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction).
Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu) Dendrobium Stem (Shihu) Akebia Caulis (Mutong) (1 qian 5 fen) Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) (raw, 3-5 qian) Or add Ophiopogon Tuber (Maimendong).
Note: Heat diseases in the human body are numerous, generally because inherent latent heat combines with seasonal heat to erupt violently. If the Stomach Qi is clear and harmonious, one encounters warm and hot weather without feeling excessive heat in many cases.
