Treats excessive accumulation of Wind-Phlegm, vomiting of saliva and foam, deviation of the mouth and eyes, paralysis of the limbs, and diarrhea caused by excessive Phlegm. (Obese individuals are prone to loose stools; a slippery pulse accompanied by anorexia and lack of hunger is generally attributed to Phlegm.) Baifuzi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Rhizoma), Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) [2 liang], Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) [soaked in water, peeled, 7 liang], Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix) [navel removed, 5 qian].
These four herbs are used raw, ground into powder, placed in a raw silk bag, and washed in well water drawn at dawn to extract the starch. The residue remaining in the bag is rubbed by hand to release more starch, then ground again and washed repeatedly until all starch is extracted. This preparation is a premier remedy for Wind-Phlegm. Although the herbs have been soaked and dried, eliminating their toxicity, their warming nature remains. It is not suitable for cases of Heat-Phlegm clouding the orifices.
Treats stroke where the patient can speak, with no deviation of the mouth but with traction and spasm of the limbs.
Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) [both processed], Fuling (Poria), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix) [skin and navel removed], Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Hei Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix), Baifuzi (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) [each 8 fen]. Decoct and take orally.
This formula consists entirely of warming and tonifying herbs; it is the principal medicine for treating deficiency-cold-Wind-Phlegm. When Wind is deficient, it becomes hyperactive; when Phlegm is cold, it obstructs. This obstructs the Yang Qi of the Spleen, preventing its free circulation throughout the body, thus causing traction and downward dragging of the limbs.
Treats dizziness caused by Wind-deficiency.
See the supplementary formula under Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) in the Blood Regulation Section, Volume 1.
Treats stroke with spasms of the limbs, deviation of the mouth and eyes, and abnormal gait due to Jiaoxie (Foot Redness and Swelling Disease).
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) [washed with wine and stir-fried], Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma) [lightly stir-fried and powdered], Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) [bark removed, equal parts]. Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine on an empty stomach.
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix).
Clears Heat from the Lower Jiao.
Treats inability to raise the limbs due to deficiency and decline of Spleen Earth. One must use this formula to treat the root cause specifically and should not add Wind-dispelling herbs.
Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction): 1 qian of each herb, plus Zhuli (Bambusae Sap) [half small cup], Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) [3 qian], add 3 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and 2 dates (Dazao). If there is thirst, remove Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and add Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
It is said that in the Stroke section, this formula is never adopted; this is described as treating the branch while forgetting the root. When Wind pathogen overflows, it causes disease in the extremities; the inability to raise the limbs indicates that Wind is overflowing internally, which is the principle involved.
