Treats Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold, or indigestion, frequent abdominal distension and fullness, diarrhea, acid regurgitation, vomiting, and other syndromes.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (2 liang), Jiao Gan Jiang (Scorched Drying Ginger Rhizome) (2 qian). Made into honey pills, size of Euryale Seed (Qianshi), chewed frequently for administration; very effective. Add Gan Cao (Licorice Root) 2 qian to make a powder, named Shen Jiang San (Ginseng and Ginger Powder).
Both can be used as appropriate.
Treats cold Han Shan (cold hernia) pain. (Yin Qi accumulates internally, and is further attacked by cold pathogenic factors; when Ying Qi and Wei Qi are not harmonious, Hernia disease forms. The scrotum becomes cold, hard like stone, and pain radiates to the testicles, termed Cold Hernia. There are seven types of Hernia: Cold Hernia, Water Hernia, Sinew Hernia, Blood Hernia, Qi Hernia, Fox Hernia, and Demon Hernia. Although the syndrome manifests in the Kidney, the pathology lies in the Liver. This is because the Foot-Jueyin Liver meridian connects with the genital organs. In women, masses in the lower abdomen, protrusion of the anterior yin, and Yin Jun (vaginal prolapse or similar growths) belong to this same category, but are not called Hernia, rather Zha [masses].)
Chuan Lian Zi (Toosendan Fruit) (4 qian), Mu Xiang (Costus Root) (3 qian), Hui Xiang (Fennel Fruit) (2 qian), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) (1 qian, soaked in decoction). Decoct with "long-flowing water" (running water from a stream).
This is a general formula for treating Hernia. Chuan Lian Zi is bitter and cold; it enters the Liver to soothe the sinews, relieving spasms and urgency, and also guides heat from the Small Intestine and Bladder out through urination.
From *Jin Gui Yao Lue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet): Treats cold qi in the abdomen causing borborygmus (rumbling sounds like thunder), severe cutting pain, reverse fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, and vomiting.
Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root) (one piece, prepared), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) (half sheng), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (1 liang), Da Zao (Jujube Fruit) (ten pieces), Jing Mi (Rice Grain) (half sheng). Use eight sheng of water, boil until the rice is cooked and the decoction is ready.
The Yin-cold qi in the abdomen rushes upward, attacking the chest and hypochondrium, extending to the Stomach, thereby increasing vomiting and reflux. After a while, the Stomach Qi becomes empty; without obstruction, the pathogen penetrates thoroughly into the Yang regions... (Text appears incomplete/corrupted here).
Treats diarrhea caused by Spleen and Kidney deficiency-cold, even chronic persistent diarrhea, unceasing abdominal pain, cold dysentery, etc.
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) (3-5 qian or 1 liang), Shan Yao (Chinese Yam Rhizome) (stir-fried), Bian Dou (Hyacinth Bean Seed) (stir-fried, 2 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (stir-fried), Jiao Gan Jiang (Scorched Drying Ginger Rhizome) (1-3 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (1 qian; if using paste/grease is also acceptable. For severe Qi deficiency, add Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rhizome) 7-8 fen, or Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) 8 fen, W Mei (Mume Fruit) 20 grains. If Liver pathogen invades the Spleen...)
