The ancient texts state: The North generates Cold, which corresponds to the Kidney (Shen) among the Zang organs, and to the Ear among the orifices. It is also said that Kidney Qi connects with the ear; when Kidney Qi is harmonious, the ear can perceive the five tones. Chen Feixia stated: Therefore, the ear fundamentally belongs to the Kidney. The area anterior to the tragus belongs to the Shaoyang Gallbladder Channel. In children, due to excess Qi in the Kidney channel, Heat rushes upward to the ear, causing body fluids to stagnate and transform into pus, or become clear fluid. There are also cases of deafness caused by water entering the ear during bathing. Internally administer Manjingzi San (Vitex Fruit Powder), and externally apply Longgu San (Dragon Bone Powder). Sores appearing before and after the tragus that exude and do not heal are named Shichuang (Eroding Sore). Folklore suggests that pointing at the moon with a finger causes sores around the ear; these are treated with external methods, applying Huangbai San (Phellodendron Powder) being effective.
If severe pain suddenly occurs in the ear, as if insects are running inside, or if blood and fluid discharge, or dry painfulness becomes unbearable, use Shedispai San (Snake Slough Powder). Sudden deafness due to Qi obstruction arises from Wind pathogen invading the brain and stagnating in the Hand-Taiyang Bladder Channel; it is appropriate to disperse Wind and clear Fire, using Daochi San (Guide Out Redness Powder) added with Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), or Tongqiao Wan (Unblocking Orifices Pill).
Redness and swelling beside the ear indicate Heat-Toxin. If not treated urgently, it will surely develop into a large carbuncle. Apply Fudu San (Toxin-Dispelling Powder) externally, and ingest Qingdu Yin (Clearing Toxin Decoction).
