Bai Shi (Platycladi Semen): Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats palpitations and fright, calms the five Zang organs, tonifies Qi, and dispels wind-dampness bi-syndrome. It treats mental confusion and deficiency exhaustion, as well as migratory joint pain and heavy, painful sensation in the waist. It nourishes blood and stops sweating. Long-term use makes the skin lustrous and complexion beautiful, improves hearing and vision, prevents hunger, delays aging, lightens the body, and prolongs life. It grows in the valleys of Mount Tai.
The leaves of Bai (Platycladus) are particularly effective. Bai Ye (Platycladi Cacumen), bitter in taste, slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed), bloody stool, uterine bleeding (benzhong), and leukorrhea with red or white discharge. It lightens the body, tonifies Qi, enables endurance against wind and cold, removes damp-bi, and relieves hunger.
Harvest according to the direction in each season, and dry in the shade. The white bark of Bai (Bai Baipi) primarily treats burns and ulcerating sores, and promotes hair growth.
Muli (Ostreae Concha), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and Gua Zi (Benincasae Semen) serve as its guiding herbs (shi). It is incompatible with Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Yangti (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata - *Note: Context implies a specific herb named Yangti, likely Rheum palmatum or similar, but standard incompatibility lists vary; here translated as Yangti*), various mineral drugs, and Qu (Medicated Leaven). Both Bai Ye and Bai Shi are highly valued for dietary therapy, with specific methods for refining and ingesting them. Bai trees are found everywhere, but those from Mount Tai are considered best. One should avoid harvesting from tombs and graves. Although available in all seasons, autumn and summer are preferred for harvest, and its resin can also be used medicinally. The text mentions incompatibility with Qu (medicated leaven); some people brew wine without issue, perhaps because mixing rice and wine differs from single use.
[Verification]: Boiling the branches and nodes of Bai to brew wine primarily treats wind-bi and li-jie-feng (migratory joint pain). Burning it to obtain resin is particularly effective for treating scabies and leprosy-like sores. Currently, the seeds (Ziren) from Shanzhou and Yizhou are considered superior. Harvesting has ceased at Mount Tai.
Jun Gui (Cinnamomum Cassia / Cinnamon Twig): Pungent in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats hundred diseases, nourishes the spirit, harmonizes the complexion, and acts as a pioneer and guide for other herbs. Long-term use lightens the body, delays aging, gives the face a radiant and charming glow, making one appear youthful like a child. It grows in the valleys and cliffs of Jiaozhi and Guilin. It has no pith, is perfectly round like bamboo. Harvest at the beginning of autumn.
Jiaozhi belongs to Jiaozhou, and Guilin belongs to Guangzhou. However, the "Shu Du Fu" states: "Jun Gui hangs over the cliff." In modern times, true Jun Gui that is perfectly round like bamboo is rarely seen. Only tender branches are split and rolled into circles, still used according to Guizhi usage, which suggests they may not be true Jun Gui. The "Xian Jing" (Immortal's Classic) mentions using Jun Gui, stating that triple-layered ones are good. This judgment indicates it is not the current cinnamon; it must be a different substance, requiring further research and investigation.
[Verification]: The character "Jun" refers to a type of bamboo. The "Tong Gui" (Tube Cinnamon) used in ancient prescriptions is this kind, hence the statement that triple-layered ones are good. This Tube Cinnamon also has double or triple layers. Its leaves resemble persimmon leaves, with three central veins, and its texture is tight and thin like bamboo. The bark of both large and small branches is Jun Gui. However, the bark of large branches cannot roll tightly, has an extremely bland taste, and is not used medicinally. It is currently only produced in Shaozhou.
