[Baijiao (Deer Horn Glue)]
The taste is sweet, the nature is neutral or warm, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats internal injury from overwork, exhaustion of essence and vitality, lower back pain, emaciation, and tonifies the middle jiao to augment qi. It treats amenorrhea due to blood stasis leading to infertility, alleviates pain, [text missing in original] stops bleeding/flow, soreness and pain in the four limbs, hyperhidrosis, dribbling discharge, and fractures with soft tissue injuries. Long-term consumption lightens the body and prolongs life. It is also known as Lujiaojiao (Deer Antler Glue). It originates from Yunzhong Commandery and is made by boiling deer antlers.
It works well when heated by fire and is incompatible with Dahuang (Rhubarb Root). Nowadays, few people boil it for use; it is mainly used in making horn bows, which indicates its utility. Its use in herbal prescriptions is rare, but Daoist practitioners often require it. The method for making Baijiao: first soak the antlers in rice water for seven days until soft, then boil and decoct them, similar to the method for making Ejiao. Another method involves finely chopping the antlers and boiling them with a piece of dry cowhide; the antlers will dissolve. If not done this way, they repel each other, and even after a hundred years, they will not soften.
[Commentary]: For Ejiao (Elk Antler Glue), one merely needs to boil to obtain a thick liquid and re-decoct it to form glue. Why must it be boiled until rotten? Making it rotten is not difficult. This statement is likely erroneous, stemming from a lack of observation of the actual glue-making process.
[Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Glue)]
The taste is sweet, the nature is neutral or slightly warm, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats internal uterine bleeding (Neibeng), severe exhaustion manifesting as chills resembling malaria, lower back and abdominal pain, soreness and pain in the four limbs, vaginal bleeding in women, [text missing in original], emaciation, deficiency of yin qi, leg soreness preventing prolonged standing, and nourishes liver qi. Long-term consumption lightens the body and augments qi. It is also known as Fuzhijiao. It originates from Dongping Commandery and is made by boiling cowhide. It comes from Dong'e County.
It is incompatible with Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) and works well when heated by fire. Because it comes from Dong'e, it is named Ejiao. Nowadays, it can also be produced in the capital. The hides used vary in age, resulting in clear or turbid glue. There are three types: thin and clear glue is used for calligraphy and painting; thick and clear glue, named Penfu Jiao, is used medicinally. When used medicinally, it is roasted over fire; for pills and powders, it must be extremely dry; for decoctions, slight roasting suffices. Turbid and black glue is used for adhesives and is not used in medicine. Adding a piece of deer antler helps it set into glue; otherwise, it will not coagulate properly.
[Tihu (Clarified Butter/Ghee)]
The taste is sweet, the nature is neutral, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats wind-pathogenic bi-syndrome (obstruction) and moistens/nourishes bone marrow. It can be used as a topical massage agent. Its nature is cold and purgative/lubricating, and its efficacy surpasses that of Su (Butter/Milk Fat), as it is derived from Su. This is the essence of Su. From one dan (a unit of volume) of high-quality Su, three to four sheng (a unit of volume) of Tihu can be obtained. It is processed by repeated pounding and refining, stored in vessels, allowed to solidify, and then extracted by piercing through the center to the bottom. Tao Hongjing stated: "Made into yellow-white cakes." This is an ignorant statement. (Newly added)
