Sweet and bitter in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats three types of parasites (intestinal parasites), directs Qi downward, and aids digestion. The leaves resemble those of Hibiscus mutabilis (Mu Jin) or Ulmus pumila (Yu), growing as small trees; the fruits resemble those of Deutzia scabra (Soushu). They are reddish in color and sweet in taste. Boiling the juice from the branches to make porridge is sweet and delicious. Feeding this to children kills Ascaris lumbricoides (Hui Chong), but it is not included in medicinal prescriptions. Lu Ji's *Caomu Shu* states: It is named Jimi, also known as Yixian, likely belonging to the category of Zitan and Yu trees, found in valleys everywhere. (Newly added)
Slightly cold in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats alternating chills and fever in children, as well as twelve types of convulsive epilepsy (Shi'er Jing Xian). It originates from Jianping. The character is also written as "Diao Teng." It is used exclusively for treating pediatric conditions and is not included in other prescriptions. [Su Jing's Note]: Those with thorns shaped like fishing hooks are this herb.
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats pathogenic factors, various Bi syndromes (painful obstruction), pain and soreness, repairs fractures and injuries, and supplements the bone marrow. Also known as Lianmu. It grows in the valleys of Shujun. There are no specific restrictions on harvesting time. [Su Jing's Note]: This is the seed of the plant, currently widely used. Its Hu name is Nazhan, originating from Tongzhou and Yuzhou. The *Shennong Bencao Jing* records the use of the root, which may be an error recording "root" instead of "seed." The seeds are pungent, neutral in nature, and non-toxic. They primarily break blood stasis, stop diarrhea, reduce swelling, and eliminate Gu poisoning and snake venom. The tree has leaves resembling Prunus armeniaca (Xing), with red and white flowers; the pulp is sour and sweet. The kernel of the seed is used.
Pungent and salty in flavor, warm in nature, slightly toxic. It primarily treats Wind-Bi syndrome, necrotic muscle tissue, pathogenic factors, headache with tearing, promotes urination and defecation, opens the nine orifices, expels malevolent spirits and essence entities, treats scrotal knotting, retained placenta in women, brightens the eyes, and benefits Jing (Essence). It can be used as a washing medicine but is not taken in decoctions. It grows in the river valleys of Yongzhou and Zou County in Lu. Those resembling pig teeth are of superior quality. Harvest the pods in September and October, and dry them in the shade. Platycladi Semen (Baishi) serves as its assistant; it is incompatible with Ophiopogonis Radix (Maimendong), and fears Azurite (Kongqing), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), and Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Kushen). It is now found everywhere; those one chi two cun long are of superior quality. Laypeople see holes caused by insects in the pods but have never seen the insects themselves, claiming they should not be approached as they cause malignant diseases. This is not true. The insects resemble green caterpillars on vegetables; when the pods turn slightly black, the insects emerge, making them hard to see. One only needs to examine fresh ones to understand the truth. [Su Jing's Note]: This item has three varieties. Zhu Ya Zao Jiao (Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa pod) is the lowest grade; its shape is curved and lacks moisture. If it is six or seven cun long, thick and round with short nodes, straight, with thin skin and abundant flesh, and strong flavor, it is excellent.
