[Bei Zi (Conch Shell)]
Taste: Salty. Nature: Neutral. Toxicity: Toxic. Indications: Epiblepharon (cataract-like opacity on the eye), Gui Zhu (ghostly fixation, a type of contagious tuberculosis), Gu Du (gu poison), abdominal pain with bloody stool, Wu Long (five types of strangury), promotes urination. Eliminates cold-heat Wen Zhu (warm malarial fever), releases the muscle layer, dissipates nodular heat. Calcining for use is superior. Also known as Bei Chi (conch teeth). Grows in ponds and marshes of the East Sea.
This refers to the small conchs currently used by people to decorate military uniforms and ornaments, which originate from the South Sea. Burned into fine powder and blown into the eyes, it effectively treats opacities. Additionally, true Ma Ke (Pearl) crushed into powder also treats blindness and opacities.
[Shui Zhu / Pearl Category]
Nature: Great Cold. Indications: Red, hot, and painful eyes; quenches thirst.
Grows in rice paddies and along the banks of lakes and ditches. Those that are round and large like pears or oranges are also boiled and eaten by people. The boiled juice also treats heat conditions, resolves alcohol intoxication, and quenches thirst.
For eye pain, take Zhen Zhu (Pearl) and Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome), place them together, wait until juice exudes after a long time, and apply this juice to the eyes; recovery is common.
[Note] "Bie Lu" states: The shell treats Shi Zhu (corpse fixation, a chronic wasting disease). Soaked in water and the juice drunk, it stops diarrhea.
[Wo Niu (Snail)]
Taste: Salty. Nature: Cold. Indications: Zei Feng (thief wind, causing facial paralysis/drooping), Die Da (traumatic injury), Da Chang Xia Tuo Gang (prolapse of the rectum), Jin Ji (tendon spasm), and Jing Xian (convulsions due to fright).
Wo Niu, pronounced via the fanqie method of 'Li Ge', but commonly called Gua Niu. It grows in mountains and near dwellings. Its head resembles Kuo Yu (slug), but it carries a shell. This was mentioned earlier. There is another variety by the sea that looks identical; when its shell is roasted over fire, it crawls out. Eating it benefits complexion, named Ji Ju (Hermit Crab). Since medical practitioners no longer use it, people do not collect it, and it is unclear which one is the correct species.
[Hai Ge (Sea Clam)]
Taste: Salty. Nature: Neutral. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Abdominal fullness and pain, shortness of breath, stops dysentery, treats strangury. Grows in the South Sea.
Hai Ge is as large as a small fist, greenish-yellow, four to five inches long. Take its Yan (operculum), calcine to ash, and use. People in the south also boil its meat to eat, but it offers no significant benefit. (Newly added)
[Bao Yu Ke (Abalone Shell)]
Taste: Salty. Nature: Neutral. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Eye opacities, stops bleeding, generates flesh. It belongs to the bivalve class, as large as Bao Yu (Abalone), with yellow-black skin and white bone, used as horse ornamentation.

[Dou Kou (Cardamom)]
Taste: Pungent. Nature: Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Warms the middle jiao, treats epigastric/abdominal pain, vomiting, removes bad breath odor. Grows in the South Sea.
Those with a pungent and sharp taste are preferred; they are very fragrant and can be held in the mouth constantly. Mixed with other ingredients in food, they are all suitable: Lian Jiang (Galangal) most warms the middle and directs qi downward; Yi Zhi Ren (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit) is hot; Gou Yuan (Citron) is slightly cold.
[Note] Dou Kou seedlings resemble Shan Jiang (Mountain Ginger), flowers are yellow-white, and roots/fruits resemble Ruo (Costus Root). Gou Yuan has a cold nature; Tao Hongjing stated it was warm, which is an error.
