Treats deficiency of Xu Lao (consumptive disease). In men, seminal emission. In women, nocturnal emissions with hematemesis. Diarrhea with undigested food. Floating heat with sweating. Insomnia at night, and other symptoms.
It is Guizhi Jia Longgu Muli Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell) (See the formula in "Zhen Fang Ge Kua" under the section on Xu Lao). Remove Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig). Add Baiwei (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) 1 qian 5 fen. Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 1 qian.
(Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) each 3 qian; Zhi Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle) 1 qian 5 fen; Xi Zao (Jujubae Fructus) 3 pieces; Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Scapulae) 3 qian; Sheng Muli (Concha Ostreae) 4 qian; Baiwei 1 qian 5 fen; Fuzi 1 qian. Decoct in water and take.)
Chen Xiuyuan said. This formula explores the subtleties of the creation's Yin and Yang. When used correctly, its effect is as immediate as striking a drum. Quack doctors suspect that Shengjiang is too dispersing. That Longgu and Muli are too astringent. They discard them and do not use them. Consequently, Guipi Tang (Spleen-Restoring Decoction) and Renshen Yangrong Tang (Ginseng Nourishing the Vigor Decoction) etc., come to dominate later. Truly, it is worth a deep sigh. Confucius said: "The people may be made to follow [the path], but they may not be made to understand why." The subtlety of why this formula works as it does, Chen Xiuyuan also does not explain. My friend Lin Yucang authored "Shennong Bencao Jing San Zhu" (Three Annotations on the Divine Farmer's Materia Medica). He collected my annotations. Many were miscellaneous comparisons of individual ingredients. Reading this formula again afterwards, one begins to perceive its flavor. ○ Lightness can remove excess (This refers to the method of inducing sweating and releasing the muscle layer.)
Also known as Chonghe Tang (Harmonizing Decoction). A universal agent for dispersing colds in all four seasons.
Chonghe Tang uses Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix). Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma). Sweat originates from Yin fluids; Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) are subtle. One formula unifies the release of the exterior for the Three Yang meridians. (Qianghuo, Fangfeng, Cangzhu each 1 qian 5 fen; Baizhi, Chuanxiong, Huangqin, Shengdi, Gancao each 2 qian; Xixin 9 fen. Add Shengjiang and Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) and decoct.)
Chen Xiuyuan said. Qianghuo disperses Cold in the Taiyang (Greater Yang) meridian. It is a medicine that restores order out of chaos. It can eliminate headache, stiffness of the neck, and generalized body pain without sweating. It serves as the principal herb. Fangfeng drives away Wind in the Taiyang meridian. It can eliminate headache, stiffness of the neck, aversion to wind, and spontaneous sweating. It serves as the principal herb. Furthermore, fearing that Wind-Cold will not resolve and will transmit to other meridians, Baizhi cuts off the path of the Yangming (Yang Brightness) meridian. Huangqin cuts off the path of the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) meridian. Cangzhu cuts off the path of the Taiyin (Greater Yin) meridian. (For those with excessive sweating, substitute Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma).) Chuanxiong cuts off the path of the Jueyin (Terminal Yin) meridian. Xixin cuts off the path of the Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) meridian. Gancao harmonizes the various herbs, enabling cooperative effort. The reason for assisting with Shengdi is that sweat transforms from fluids. Tonifying Yin is the method of supporting the expulsion of pathogens.
