Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) and plague. Wind-dampness causing wind-induced vertigo. Convulsions, curling up, and wind-phlegm. Headache and vertigo. Pain in the four limbs. Aversion to cold with high fever. Stiffness of the neck and pain in the eyes. It can be taken by both the elderly and children.
Renshen Baidu San (Ginseng Decoction for Overcoming Toxicity) consists of Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Fuling (Poria), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Qianhu (Radix Peucedani), Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), and Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), each 1 qian; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 0.5 qian; add Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) for decoction. ○ If there is vexatious heat and dry mouth/throat, add Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae).
Wang Ang stated: Qianghuo regulates the wandering wind of the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel; Duhuo regulates the hidden wind of the Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) channel, and additionally dispels dampness and relieves pain. Chuanxiong and Chaihu harmonize the blood and ascend clear yang. Zhike and Qianhu move phlegm and descend qi. Gancao, Jiegeng, Renshen, and Fuling clear the lungs and strengthen the stomach. The reason for using Renshen as the chief ingredient is to support healthy qi to rectify pathogenic factors. Adding Sancangmi (aged rice from Chen warehouse) 3 qian creates Canglin Tang (Granary Decoction), which treats Jin Kou Li (Dysentery with inability to eat).
Treats common colds in all four seasons; it is a mild formula for releasing the exterior (expelling pathogens from the surface).
Xiangsu Yin (Perilla and Cyperus Infusion) contains Gancao and Chenpi. (Zisuye (Folium Perillae) 2 qian; Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi) stir-fried and Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) each 1.5 qian; Zhigancao (Prepared Radix Glycyrrhizae) 1 qian; add Jiang (Zingiber) and Congbai (Bulbus Allii Cepae), decoct in water and take orally. This allows slight depression/stagnation to dissipate through the skin and hair, ranking it higher than typical contemporary formulas.) Additionally add Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae), Chuanxiong, and Manjingzi (Fructus Viticis) each 1 qian. (In Yixue Xinwu [Medical Insights], it is named Jiawei Xiangsu Yin [Modified Perilla and Cyperus Infusion].) One must also understand the methods of releasing the muscle layer and activating blood circulation.
Chen Xiuyuan stated: Zhang Zhongjing's formulas such as Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) and Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) have never been replaceable by other formulas. Later practitioners replaced them with Jiuwei Qianghuo Tang (Nine-Ingredient Notopterygium Decoction), Renshen Baidu San, and this formula. They appear stable, but in reality, their acrid and dispersing nature is excessive and deviates from proper method. If sweating occurs after taking them, there are two concerns. First, concern that excessive acrid dispersion causes profuse sweating, leading to severe Yang collapse or mild sweat leakage. Second, concern that acrid dispersion forces sweating, disturbing organ qi and causing epistaxis (nosebleed), damaging body fluids and resulting in unrelieved fever and unquenchable thirst. If sweating does not occur after taking them, there are also two concerns. First, concern that acrid dispersion stirs internal fire, assisting pathogenic factors to enter the interior, resulting in manic fever and insomnia. Second, concern that acrid dispersion uproots the Kidney foundation, causing pathogenic factors to enter the Yin, resulting in a fine pulse and drowsiness. If one follows Zhang Zhongjing's methods, these concerns would not exist.
