Wupi San (Five-Bark Powder) consists of five types of barks. They are Chenpi (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae), Fuling Pi (Poria with Hostwood), Jiang Pi (Pericarpium Zingiberis Recens), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis), and Dafupi (Fructus Trogopterori), which form a unique combination. (Chenpi, Fuling Pi, Jiang Pi, Sangbaipi, Dafupi.) Alternatively, Wujia Pi (Cortex Acanthopanacis) can be used to replace Sangbaipi.
This formula is suitable for treating skin edema caused by Spleen deficiency. (Because the Spleen cannot transport fluids for the Stomach, edema results. Edema above the middle body is suitable for diaphoresis, while edema below the middle body is suitable for promoting urination. This formula contains the intent of regulation and tonification amidst its water-draining action. All ingredients use bark parts because water overflows into the skin; using barks treats skin with barks, following the principle of similarity.)
Chen Xiuyuan stated: This formula originates from Hua Yuanhua's *Zhongzang Jing* (Classic of the Middle Viscera) and holds profound meaning. One should carefully distinguish between cold, heat, excess, and deficiency, and then add appropriate herbs for cooling, warming, tonifying, or purging.
(Two-Chen Decoction) Treats conditions in obese individuals caused by damp-phlegm, such as phlegm-induced wheezing and chest/abdominal distension.
Erchen Tang (Two-Chen Decoction) uses Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Chenpi (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae), assisted by Fuling (Poria) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). (Banxia 2 qian, Chenpi 1 qian, Fuling 3 qian roasted, Gancao 8 fen. Add fresh ginger.)
Chen Xiuyuan stated: This formula is a general agent for resolving phlegm. The root of phlegm is water; Fuling controls water to treat the root. The movement of phlegm stems from dampness; Fuling drains dampness to stabilize its movement. Among the ingredients, only this one herb is the true medicine for treating phlegm. The others, Banxia for descending rebellious qi, Chenpi for smoothing qi, and Gancao for harmonizing the middle, serve merely as assistants and guides to Fuling. Therefore, in Zhang Zhongjing’s writings, whenever there is excessive phlegm, Fuling is added; whenever there is vomiting, Banxia is added. This is an unchangeable method of the ancient sages. Modern people do not explore ancient teachings, mistakenly regarding Banxia as the exclusive drug for resolving phlegm. Imitating the method of Xixian San (Thin Saliva Powder), they process it with Mingfan (Alumen), causing a drug intended to descend rebellious qi to instead induce vomiting. This is truly lamentable. Some further mistake this formula for a solution-releasing agent for the Three Yang meridians; taking it causes pathogenic factors to linger and generate heat, leading to death without realization. I have explained this in detail under the annotation for the authentic Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), so I will not repeat it here.
Bixie Fenqing Yin (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Clearing Turbid Decoction) primarily uses Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii), along with Gancao Shao (Radix Glycyrrhizae with tip), Wuyao (Linderae Radix), and Yizhiren (Semen Alpiniae Oxyphyllae). (Wuyao, Yizhiren, Shichangpu, Bixie each in equal parts; Gancao Shao in half amount.) After decoction, add a small amount of salt. (Add a little salt.) It drives away lingering stranguria and turbid urine after several doses. (Spermatorrhea, leukorrhea/turbid urine.)
Wang Ang stated: Bixie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) can drain damp-heat from the Jueyin and Yangming meridians, removing turbidity and clarifying the clear orifices. Wuyao (Linderae Radix) disperses rebellious qi and stops frequent urination; Yizhiren (Semen Alpiniae Oxyphyllae) secures the Spleen and Kidney and opens up depression.
This formula achieves restriction (of leakage) through dispersion and drainage.
