Treats conditions of upper heat and lower cold, where taking cooling medicines exacerbates the symptoms.
This is Guizhi Fuzi Dihuang Wan (Cinnamon Twig and Aconite Rehmannia Pill), with doubled amounts of Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) and Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), plus Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) and Yuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae) each at four liang.
Chen Xiuyuan states: This formula originates from Sun Simiao's *Qianjin Yifang*. Shaoyao can restrain the fire qi within Wood (Liver), returning it to its root; Yuanshen can stimulate the essence qi within Water (Kidney), allowing it to ascend and interact with the Upper Jiao. Therefore, these two herbs are added to the Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill). One serves to accelerate the downward movement of Fuzi, and the other prevents the upward floating of Rougui. For any sores in the mouth and tongue, red face, red eyes, loose teeth, or worsening symptoms upon taking cooling medicines, this is a secret method.
Treats Mingmen Fire Decline (Decline of Gate of Life Fire/Kidney Yang Deficiency), where the Fire cannot generate Earth (Spleen/Stomach), leading to vomiting, diarrhea, and cold extremities; sometimes Yin Fire surges upward, causing redness and heat in the head and face, dizziness, nausea; turbid Qi rebels and fills the chest and hypochondrium, causing stabbing pain in the chest and hypochondrium, and distension and urgency in the umbilical and abdominal regions.
This is Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae) and Huangqi (Radix Astragali). The specific processing methods are as follows: Renshen (Radix Ginseng) three liang, soaked in the decoction juice of one chao five qian of Chuan Fuzi (Prepared Radix Aconiti Lateralis), then removing the Fuzi; Huangqi one chao five qian, soaked in the wine-decoction juice of one liang of Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), then removing the Chuanxiong; Shanyao one liang, soaked in the decoction juice of three qian of Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), then removing the Ganjiang; Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) two liang, soaked in the decoction juice of five qian of Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), then removing the Chenpi; Fuling (Poria) two liang, soaked in the wine-decoction juice of six qian of Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi), then removing the Rougui; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) one chao five qian, soaked in the decoction juice of one liang of Wuyao (Radix Linderae), then removing the Wuyao. Of the above five herbs, except for Fuling which is slowly dried over alternating mild and strong heat, do not stir-fry the others to avoid damaging their medicinal properties, then grind into fine powder. Take three qian per dose, with one zhan of water, three slices of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and one Hongzao (Fructus Jujubae), boil for several boils, add "Yi Yi Nian" (likely a typo or specific local term, possibly referring to a preparation aid or residue handling instruction, literally 'add one pinch') to mix with the dregs and take. After taking the medicine, drink a cup of hot wine to assist the medicinal power. Note: If processed into pills with refined honey, taking three qian per dose is even better.
Chen Xiuyuan states: This formula comes from Yu Tianyi's *Zhi Yao Mi Zhi* (Secret Instructions on Drug Processing) and has profound meaning. Zhang Shiweng's annotation in *Yi Tong* is also exquisite. Zhang Shiweng says: The original formula consists of thirteen ingredients from *Qianjin Fang*, but adopts the method of separately processing the acrid and dry nature of herbs like Fuzi. Although the strength of Sijunzi Tang plus Shanyao and Huangqi is slightly inferior to the original formula by one notch, since the fierce qualities have removed the true dregs, formless Qi transforms into formed substance, it is indeed a gentle agent for warming and tonifying the Minor Fire (Shao Huo) without the fear of consuming Qi. It is truly a meritorious minister of *Qianjin Fang*.
