Indicated for deficiency of Heart Blood, restlessness of the Spirit (Shen), depletion of body fluids, forgetfulness, palpitations, constipation, and sores in the mouth and tongue.
Tianwang Buxin Dan (Emperor of Heaven's Heart-Nourishing Pill) was left behind by Tianwang, out of pity for the mountain monk's difficulty in requesting lessons. [It contains] Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), two types of Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix and Asparagi Radix), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Baiziren (Platycladi Semen), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Sanshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, Panacis Quinquefolii Radix, and Notoginseng Radix), Fuling (Poria), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) processed into pills. (The Daoist Canon records: "In the past, Monk Zhigong lectured on scriptures day and night. King Deng, pitying his toil, bestowed this prescription upon him." Ingredients: Suanzaoren 1 liang, Danggui 1 liang, Shengdihuang 4 liang, Baiziren 1 liang, Maimendong 1 liang, Tiandong 1 liang, Yuanzhi 5 qian, Wuweizi 1 liang, Baifuling 5 qian, Renshen 5 qian, Danshen 5 qian, Yuanshen 5 qian, Jiegeng 5 qian. Processed with refined honey into pills. Each liang is divided into ten pills. Coated with gold foil. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in a decoction of Jiedao (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) and dates. Take after meals or before bedtime. Can also be made into small pills. Details vary slightly among texts.)
Chen Xiuyuan said: In small seal script, the character for Heart (Xin) is merely an inverted Fire (Huo). Fire does not wish to blaze upward; therefore, Shengdihuang is used to nourish Water, enabling Water to ascend and interact with the Heart. Yuanshen, Danshen, and the two Dongs are used to clear Fire, enabling Fire to descend and interact with the Kidney. Furthermore, Renshen and Fuling harmonize Heart Qi, Danggui generates Heart Blood, the two seeds (Suanzaoren and Baiziren) calm the Spirit, Yuanzhi disperses stagnation, and Wuweizi gathers dispersion. Additionally, Jiegeng's ascending nature serves as a guide. Once the Heart is nourished, what suffering remains from forgetfulness, palpitations, dry fluids, tongue sores, and constipation?
Indicated for insufficiency of Kidney Essence, flaming up of deficient Fire, weakness and soreness of the waist and knees, aching pain of bone joints, heel pain, dysuria or retention of urine, or incontinence, seminal emission during dreams.
Water
Indicated for decline of Mingmen Fire, inability to generate Earth, resulting in deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach, lack of appetite, loose stools, or decline of the lower origin, abdominal pain, frequent nocturnal urination, etc.
Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) nourishes Yin and benefits the Kidney and Liver. [It contains] Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), and Fuling (Poria). (Shanzhuyu 4 liang, Shanyao 4 liang, Mudanpi 3 liang, Zexie 3 liang, Baifuling 3 liang, Shudihuang 8 liang. Processed with refined honey into pills. Take 2 qian per dose, delivered with light salt water decoction.) Add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) to support True Fire. (To the above formula, add Guizhi 1 liang and one large prepared Fuzi. Named Bawei Dihuang Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill), originally named Shenqi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill). This pill tonifies Fire within Water.) The efficacy of Bawei is equivalent to Jiuzhuan Dan. (Ke Yunbo said: Water body is inherently still, yet flows endlessly due to the movement of Qi, which is the function of Fire. If Mingmen has Fire, then the Kidney has vital energy. Therefore, it is not named Wushen (Warming Kidney), but Shenqi (Kidney Qi).)
Chen Xiuyuan said: Liuwei Wan tonifies Kidney Water, Bawei Wan tonifies Kidney Qi, and their subtlety lies in promoting urination. Whenever True Water in the Kidney is insufficient and True Fire is weak, urine volume must be excessive. These two formulas are not orthodox medicines for tonifying the Kidney; do not believe them due to Xue Lizhai's speculative theories. Jin Xiao Baizhu Fuzi Tang (Near-Efficacy Atractylodes Macrocephala and Prepared Aconite Decoction) is excellent. Its formula is listed among hot agents; it should be studied carefully. ○ Shenqi Wan appears five times in Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet). First appearing in Chapter 5, stating it treats Honggangjiao (Gout) entering the lower abdomen causing numbness. Second appearing in Chapter 6, stating it treats deficiency consumption with lumbar pain and difficult urination. Third appearing in Chapter 12, stating that for shortness of breath with slight fluid retention, it should be eliminated via urination, with Shenqi Wan as the primary treatment. Fourth appearing in Chapter 13, stating it treats men with Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst) where urine is excessively abundant despite drinking one dou, resulting in one dou of urine. Fifth appearing in Chapter 22, stating it treats women with Zhuanbao (displacement of the bladder) unable to urinate; if urination is promoted, it heals. Observing these five entries, they mostly address disorders of the lower abdomen and Bladder. It cannot be used generally to treat symptoms of Fire decline. Moreover, this formula in Jin Gui is not included in the category of the Five Fluids. It is even more strange that modern people claim it as a universal agent for treating water disorders.
