陈修园曰。此交通心肾之方也。姜附椒桂。热药也。热药如夏日可畏。此方诸品。固肾
补脾。温药也。温药如冬日可爱。故时医每奉为枕秘。然真火大衰者。断非此方可以幸效。
且柔缓之品。反有减食增呕致泄之虞也。
大补精髓。益气养神。
人有三奇精气神。求之任督守吾真。二仙胶取龟和鹿。枸杞人参共四珍。（鹿角血者十
斤。龟板十斤。枸杞二十两。人参十五两。用铅镡如法熬膏。初服酒化一钱五分。渐加至三
钱。空心服下。）
李士材曰。人有三奇。精气神。生生之本也。精伤无以生气。气伤无以生神。精不足者。
补之以味。鹿得天地之阳气最全。善通督脉。足于精者。故能多淫而寿。龟得天地之阴气最
浓。善通任脉。足于气者。故能伏息而寿。二物气血之属。又得造化之微。异类有情。竹破
竹补之法也。人参清食气之壮火。
所以补气中之怯。枸杞滋不足之真阴。所以补神中之火。是方也。一阴一阳。无偏胜之
忧。入气入血。有和平之美。由是精生而气旺。气旺而神昌。庶几龟鹿之年矣。故曰二仙。

陈修园说。这是交通心肾的方剂。干姜、附子、花椒、肉桂，都是热性药。热性药像夏天的烈日那样令人敬畏。这个方子的各种药物，固护肾脏、补益脾脏，属于温性药。温性药像冬天的暖阳那样令人喜爱。所以当时的医生常常把它当作枕边的秘密珍藏。然而真火（命门之火）严重衰退的人，绝对不是这个方子可以侥幸见效的。而且柔润缓和的药物，反而有减少食欲、增加呕吐导致腹泻的担忧。

李士材说。人有精、气、神这三样奇珍，是生生不息的根本。精受损就无法产生气，气受损就无法产生神。精不足的，用厚味的药物来补。鹿得到天地阳气最全面，善于通达督脉。精气充足的人，所以能多行房事而长寿。龟得到天地阴气最浓厚，善于通达任脉。气充足的人，所以能潜伏呼吸而长寿。这两种动物属于气血之类，又得造化之微妙，异类有情，这是“竹破竹补”的方法。人参清除食气产生的壮火。
所以补益气中的怯弱。枸杞滋补肾中不足的真阴。所以补充神中的火。这个方剂，一阴一阳，没有偏胜的忧虑。入气入血，有和平的美好功效。因此精生而气旺，气旺而神昌。差不多就能达到龟鹿那样的寿命了。所以叫作二仙。

Ginger (Shengjiang/Fuzi context implies heat), Aconitum carmichaelii (Fuzi), Zanthoxylum bungeanum (Jiaojiao), and Cinnamomum cassia (Guigui) are hot medicines. However, for those whose True Fire (Mingmen Fire) is severely depleted, this formula will certainly not yield a lucky cure. Moreover, soft and mild substances may risk reducing appetite, increasing vomiting, and causing diarrhea.

Humans possess three wonders: Jing (Essence), Qi (Energy), and Shen (Spirit). Seeking them lies in the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) and Du Mai (Governor Vessel), guarding our true Yuan (Primal Energy). Er Xian Jiao (Two Immortals Glue) takes Tortoise Plastron and Deer Antler. Goji berry (Lycium barbarum fruit) and Ginseng (Panax ginseng) together form four precious items. (Deer antler blood 10 jin, Tortoise plastron 10 jin, Goji berry 20 liang, Ginseng 15 liang. Those abundant in Jing can engage in frequent intercourse yet live long. The Tortoise obtains the densest Yin Qi of Heaven and Earth, and excels at unblocking the Ren Mai. Those abundant in Qi can lie still and breathe slowly, thus living long. These two animals belong to the categories of Qi and Blood, and further obtain the subtleties of creation. Different species with affectionate bonds; this is the method of "repairing bamboo with bamboo." Ginseng clears the vigorous fire generated by food digestion.
Thus, it tonifies the timidity within Qi. Goji berry nourishes the insufficient True Yin. Thus, it supplements the fire within Shen. This formula, one Yin and one Yang, has no worry of excessiveness. Entering Qi and Blood, it possesses the beauty of harmony. From this, Jing is generated and Qi becomes prosperous; Qi becomes prosperous and Shen flourishes. One may almost reach the longevity of turtles and deer. Hence it is called Er Xian (Two Immortals).
