The *Bozhai Bian* records: Yao, having been promoted from the position of Dianjian to Zuozhu, found his mother suffering from dysentery. Various medicines proved ineffective. He consulted Li Ang for divination, and the hexagram indicated that a divine person had pointed out the use of a spiritual herb. One day, during an audience with the Emperor, the Emperor was surprised by Yao's haggard complexion. Yao reported the truth in full. The Emperor issued an edict bestowing upon him a powder (Sanzi). After several doses, he recovered. The Emperor also instructed that only roasted Toona seeds (Chunzi) should be used, ground into a fine powder and taken with water. I examined the *Bencao*, which states that Toona pods (Chunjia) treat blood in the stool. This plant is now common everywhere; its pods grow in summer. The Chinese Toona (Chu) has flowers but no pods, while those with pods have no flowers. It commonly grows on the stinky Chinese Toona, and I have never seen pods on the fragrant Toona. However, people in common parlance do not distinguish between Toona and Chinese Toona, so they vulgarly call this "Toona pod," when in fact it is a "Chinese Toona pod." The annotation states that Chinese Toona bark treats childhood malnutrition dysentery (Ganli). Only the *Rihuazi Bencao* records that Chinese Toona bark is warm and non-toxic, stops diarrhea and treats intestinal wind (Changfeng), and should be honey-fried when used in medicine. The *Yaoxing Lun* records that the white bark of Chinese Toona is bitter and slightly hot, non-toxic, and can treat red and white dysentery, intestinal slipping, hemorrhoids, and unceasing bloody diarrhea. Take one handful of white bark, fifty grains of warehouse rice, one handful of green onion whites, three cun of Licorice root (Gancao), two he of prepared Soybean paste (Zhichi), boil in one sheng of water until half remains, and take in one dose. Children's dosage should be adjusted according to their age. The leaves, branches, and bark have the same efficacy.
Regardless of whether the dysentery is red or white. From the biography of Han Mingdao (courtesy name Yueqing).
Corydalis Rhizome (Xuanhusuo), quantity unspecified, stir-fried on a new tile until done, then ground into a fine powder. Each dose consists of two qian, mixed with rice drink (Mi Yin) and taken orally. Effect is achieved with just one dose.
For severe cases, several doses are needed to stop. From the prescription of Zhao Yanxin.
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Sanguisorbae Radix (Diyu), Colla Corii Asini (Ejiao) (each 1 fen), Tridacnidae Concha (Bangfen) stir-fried until yellow, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (1 qian), Frankincense (Ruxiang) (a small amount), Myristica Semen (Roudoukou) (two pieces, baked in flour coating).
These nine ingredients are coarsely crushed. Add one zhan of water, decoct until eight fen remains, remove the dregs, and take warm. Time of administration is unrestricted.
The prescription of Chu Rixin claims to be very remarkable.
Almond (Xingren) (49 grains), Crotonis Fructus (Badou) (49 grains, each burned to ash over a hemp oil lamp flame while preserving its nature), Cinnabar Fumigatum (Baicaoshuang) (1 qian).
Each ingredient is separately ground into a fine powder. Use yellow beeswax melted into a paste to form pills the size of small mung beans. Each dose consists of five pills. For white dysentery, take with Ginger Decoction (Jiang Tang); for red dysentery, take with Licorice Decoction (Gancao Tang). If one wishes to stop the turning sensation (referring to tenesmus or abdominal cramping), take seven pills with Jujube Decoction (Zao Tang).
