Heart Qi (a disorder of insufficient heart qi or impaired heart function) Heart Wind (a disorder caused by wind pathogen affecting the Heart Channel)
First Formula:
Take one large piece of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, prepared aconite root). Remove the bark and umbilicus, slice it, and place it in a thin silk bag. Use one large sheng of fresh Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang, rehmannia root) natural juice. Simmer slowly in a silver or stone vessel over low heat. When the Rehmanniae Radix juice is nearly exhausted, remove the Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata. Dry it in the sun and grind it into a fine powder. Then add the remaining Rehmanniae Radix juice and grind to form a paste. Form pills the size of mung beans. Take 30 pills each time, swallowed down with rice water. For an illness lasting twenty to thirty years, only two pieces of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata are sufficient for a cure. For an illness lasting two to three years, one piece of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata is sufficient for a cure.
This is the formula of Master Shenji from Kunshan, presented to Prime Minister Zhang Weigong. It was effective when taken by the family members of Prefect Han Zichang.
Second Formula:
Take one pork kidney. Boil it with two bowls of water until reduced to about one and a half bowls. Finely chop the kidney. Add half a liang of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, ginseng) and half a liang of Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, Chinese angelica root) (remove the upper reed-like part and the lower fine roots, use the middle section). Chop these together and decoct until reduced to eight-tenths of the original liquid. Eat the kidney and take it with the decoction. If there is any uneaten kidney, bake it dry together with the dregs of the aforementioned two herbs. Grind into a fine powder. Use Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao, Chinese yam) paste to form pills the size of Chinese parasol tree seeds. Take 30 to 50 pills each time. It is beneficial to take this medicine frequently. Physician Ding Yugan from Pingjiang told Privy Councilor Ge:
Third Formula:
Treats Heart Qi and also treats Heart Wind. This formula was transmitted by Sheng Juemin to Minister Wang Xuanzi.
Arisaematis Rhizoma (Tiannanxing, giant typhonium tuber) (thick, remove the bark and take the core, weigh one liang, used raw) Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, prepared aconite root) (one piece, weighing more than seven qian, processed by paozhi, remove bark and umbilicus) Cinnabaris (Zhusha, cinnabar) (one liang, processed by water-flying method)
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Use pig heart blood to form pills the size of Chinese parasol tree seeds. If not viscous enough, add a small amount of wheat flour paste. Take with a decoction of Hemerocallis fulva (Wangyoucao, daylily) root. Take one dose each during the transition periods of the Zi (midnight) and Wu (noon) hours. Take 15 pills each time. Remarkably effective!
Fourth Formula:
This is the formula of Official Gui Zhen. Lü Shaozhang, in the Renyin year of the Chunxi reign period, suffered a family tragedy. After prolonged sorrow, he developed a manic disorder. Taking one dose of this formula stabilized him. Subsequently, he took heart-nourishing medicines like Ren (likely referring to Renshen, ginseng, or a class of tonics) and recovered after seven days. This was stated by Prefect Liao Shuofu.
Take half a liang of Cinnabaris (Chensha, cinnabar). Grind into a fine powder. Use two sheng of good quality wine. Simmer slowly in a silver, stone, or earthenware vessel over low heat until reduced to about half a sheng. Add one qian of Moschus (Shexiang, musk). Boil for a few more boils.
