The prescription of Qian Guanwen.
Zhusha (Cinnabar, 4 liang, finely ground and processed by water flotation) Xingren (Apricot Kernel, 2 liang, skin and tips removed, ground)
Take three Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit) from Xuanzhou, cut off the lid, use a bamboo knife to scoop out the pulp. First insert Zhusha (Cinnabar) and press it firmly, then insert Xingren (Apricot Kernel) to fill the space completely. Replace the lid, secure it with bamboo pins, wrap it in a raw silk bag, place it in a porcelain vessel, and steam it for one hundred cycles. Once the required number of steams is completed, remove it, scrape off the rough outer skin of the Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit), grind everything together into a fine powder. When it can be formed into pills, shape them into pills the size of mung beans. Take ten pills per dose. On an empty stomach, take with warm wine or rice drink. It greatly strengthens Yuan Qi (Original Qi) and eliminates various diseases.
Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit) strictly avoids iron; contact with iron renders it ineffective!
Tonifies and supplements Zhen Yuan (True Original Qi). Treats various deficiencies and insufficiencies, excess above and deficiency below, panting and urgency, diarrhea, coldness of hands and feet, knotting pain in the lower abdomen, regurgitation and vomiting, indigestion, white turbidity and nocturnal emission, frequent stools with night sweats, mental confusion and false fright, tinnitus and vertigo, chronic dysentery with red and white discharge, intestinal wind and hemorrhoids/fistulas; various women's diseases, irregular menstruation, leukorrhea and metrorrhagia, cold deficiency of the uterus, long-term infertility. This Dan (Pill) is warm and balanced without being excessive. Regular consumption stabilizes and nourishes Heart Qi (Heart Spirit), tonifies essence and spirit, lightens the body and prolongs life, invigorates blood and preserves youth.
Daizhe Shi (Hematite, 1 jin) Yuliang Shi (Kaolinite, 4 liang) Shizhonghuang (Yellow Earth from Stone, 2 liang) Chishizhi (Red Halloysite, 5 liang 1 fen)
The above four ingredients are each ground into fine powder. Weigh them again to ensure sufficient quantity, sift them together two or three times through a sieve, and grind them uniformly until fine. Take two or three spoons at a time, place them in a cup, add drops of water to form pills the size of Sophora seeds (Wutongzi). Complete the pill-making quickly, then place them on a plate. The standard is that they should be smooth, solid, and free of wrinkles or cracks. Because Chishizhi (Red Halloysite) is hard, the pills must be made immediately as needed.
Surround with charcoal, using more is better. Place hot fire from the top to burn slowly. Do not use a fan underneath. Burn until the fire and medicine turn red-hot, then let them cool naturally before removing.
In a book published by Wang Zhizhong, Professor of Xiazhou, titled "Ji Xiao Fang" (Prescriptions of Proven Efficacy), it states: Jin Dan (Golden Pill) treats many conditions, especially with miraculous efficacy for malaria. The formula uses Daizhe Shi (Hematite) 1 jin, Yuliang Shi (Kaolinite) halved, Chishizhi (Red Halloysite) and Shizhonghuang (Yellow Earth from Stone) 4 liang each. Grind them together, add drops of water to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Burn three jin of charcoal as the standard. Take three to five pills per dose on an empty stomach with cold salt water.
There is also Xiao Jin Dan (Small Golden Pill), which also treats malaria. Daizhe Shi (Hematite) 8 liang, quenched seven times with vinegar over fire; Yu Yuliang (Halloysite, often synonymous with Yuliang Shi in this context, 6 liang), quenched seven times with vinegar over fire; Chishizhi (Red Halloysite) 4 liang, ground; Shizhonghuang (Yellow Earth from Stone) 2 liang, ground. Add drops of water to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Dry in shade for three to four days, roll them in a silver vessel to make them smooth, and store in a porcelain jar. Take three to five pills per dose on an empty stomach with warm rice soup. The symptoms treated are roughly similar to the previous formula.
