To treat pediatric gan accumulation with emaciation. Moxibustion of three cones (zhuang) is applied on the sharp tip of the Jiuwei bone below the chest. Subsequently, moxibustion of three cones is applied on the sharp tip of the coccyx at the lower end of the spine. This also treats pediatric gan accumulation with emaciation, rectal prolapse, thin body with thirst and drinking, and haggard appearance, when various prescriptions have failed to cure. Moxibustion of three cones is applied in the bony depression three cun above the coccyx.
To treat pediatric jing gan (startling gan) with yellowish emaciation, abdominal masses, distension, diarrhea, and dysentery, as well as all kinds of deficiency and damage. Moxibustion of fourteen cones (two times seven) is applied below Jiuwei, at Zhongwan (CV12), located centrally above the umbilicus. Furthermore, moxibustion of fourteen cones is applied at Pishu (BL20), which is one and a half cun lateral to the lower border of the tenth thoracic vertebra on both sides of the spine. The effect is excellent.
Regarding the method of moxibustion for Spleen Spirit in children: Before moxibustion, draw a cross on the soil field and mark its center. First, burn one incense stick while chanting: "Do not moxa the Heavenly Spirit, do not moxa the Earthly Spirit, only moxa the Spleen Spirit." After finishing this, proceed to moxa the sick child. For boys, use the left hand; for girls, use the right hand. Use a bamboo strip four or five cun long. Have the child make a fist. Use the head of the dorsal interphalangeal joint of the middle finger as the starting point, measure to the end of the middle phalanx, then fold the bamboo strip loosely once, and fold it back so that the ends align. Break it at this length. Use this length to locate the waist eyes (yaoyan), where there are two indistinct depressions on either side of the lower back. Place the two tips of this folded bamboo strip against one depression; the point where the tip lands marks the waist eye acupoint. Having determined this position, the tip above the depression serves as the reference for the Yaoyan acupoint. Prepare moxa cones according to the child's age and the severity of the illness. For smaller children, the cone size is like a chopstick head; for larger children, like a fingertip. Apply twenty-eight cones (four times seven) for severe cases, or twenty-one cones (three times seven) for mild cases. After moxibustion, remove the fire qi from the concave acupoint on the ankle of the left foot for boys. Children under three years old receive three cones; those over five years old receive seven cones. Afterward, take a bamboo stick of the same length as described above, straighten it, and place it vertically on the child's heart pit (xin kan). The point where the bottom of the vertical stick reaches is the acupoint. The method for locating the heart pit is similar. Consider the child's size and illness severity: apply three cones for mild cases, or fourteen cones (two times seven) for severe cases. If the disease manifests, it indicates the treatment is effective. If no blister forms, administer a vesicating substance orally to induce blisters. After blisters form, observe dietary restrictions for more than ten days. Once the blisters heal, efficacy will be evident. Within ten days to half a month, appetite improves, jaundice subsides, and complexion changes, achieving complete recovery. My grandson survived thanks to this method, and many others have also recovered. If moxibustion is desired, having someone knowledgeable in acupoints to locate them precisely is even better.
To treat pediatric abdominal distension, moxa Shuifen (CV9).
To treat pediatric wugu gan (innocent gan). There is a nodule on the posterior vertex edge, sized like a marble, movable upon pressure, soft and painless. Inside, there are worms resembling rice flour. If not promptly punctured, the worms will scatter with heat qi, corroding the zang-fu organs, leading to boils and sores on the limbs, pus and blood in stool, high fever, emaciation, and exposed skull bones and blood. These are caused by deficiency and exhaustion of qi and blood. It may also result from washing infant clothes and drying them under eaves, where bird feathers contaminate them. When the child wears these clothes, insects enter the skin and hair, causing this disease. Whenever drying infant clothes, they must be dried over a mild fire. Treatment involves puncturing with a needle and applying ointment plaster for cure.
To treat pediatric pi qi (accumulation) that persists without cure. Moxa one point of Zhongwan (CV12) and one point of Zhangmen (LR13). Zhangmen is located lateral to Dahan (SP15), directly opposite the costal margin at the level of the umbilicus. Lie on the side, flex the upper leg, raise the arm to locate the point. Moxa seven cones each on the right Zhongwan and Zhangmen points. Moxa fourteen cones (two times seven) on the midline of the spine behind the umbilicus. To locate Zhongwan, measure four finger-widths below the liver area; moxibustion here is invariably effective.
To treat pediatric ru pi (breast accumulation). Use two thick threads to measure the width between the two nipples. Hang them down from the nipples, aligning vertically, and mark the corresponding positions on the left and right ribs. Moxa seven cones at each location. The moxa cone should be the size of a wheat grain.
To treat pediatric pi (from Wei Shi Fang). Moxa three cones at one cun below each nipple.
To treat pediatric bu lu (spitting up milk). Moxa Dazhui (GV14). Also moxa Chize (LU5), located at the midpoint of the transverse crease of the elbow. Also moxa Jiujiiao.
To treat pediatric gan erosion sores. Moxa seven cones on both sides of the spine at the fifteenth thoracic vertebra. If not cured, add seven more cones.
To treat pediatric abdominal fullness and inability to eat or drink. Select Xuanzhong (GB39).
To treat emaciation without weight gain, poor appetite, and failure to develop flesh and skin (from Zisheng Jing). Moxa Weishu (BL21) with three cones. It is located one and a half cun lateral to the lower border of the twelfth thoracic vertebra on both sides (some sources say one cone).
To treat pediatric emaciation, hernia-like abdominal swelling (Ben Tun), flaccidity of the four limbs, and inability to lift shoulders and back (from Jisheng Bacui). Moxa two points of Zhangmen (LR13) with fourteen cones (two times seven). Zhangmen is located lateral to Dahan (SP15), directly opposite the costal margin at the level of the umbilicus. Lie on the side, flex the upper leg, extend the lower leg, and raise the arm to locate the point.
