Treating infantile wind-stroke. Manifesting as opisthotonos (a condition where the body arches backward like a bow). Frequent crying. Disordered speech. Attacks occur without fixed timing. (From *Jisheng Bacun*). Moxibustion at Baihui (GV20) acupoint, seven moxa cones.
Treating sudden contraction of wind-toxin. Such as facial paralysis with deviation of mouth and eyes. Inability to speak (From *Quanying Fang*). Moxibustion at Hegu (LI4) acupoint, three moxa cones. The acupoint is located where the thumb and index finger meet when closed. For left-sided pathology, treat the right side; for right-sided pathology, treat the left side.
Treating opisthotonos. Moxibustion at Shenting (GV24) acupoint. Located on the hairline, directly above the nose, entering the hairline by three fen. Moxibustion at each location, three moxa cones.
Treating wind-spasm. Opisthotonos. Trismus (lockjaw) with inability to speak. Spasticity and tightness of the four limbs (From *Quanying Fang*). Moxibustion at Baihui (GV20), Neiguan (PC6), and Shenting (GV24), three moxa cones each. Baihui is five cun above the anterior hairline. Neiguan is two cun proximal to the wrist crease, between the two tendons. Shenting is on the hairline, directly above the nose.
Treating infantile wheezing and distension. Commonly known as Horse Spleen Wind. Also called Wind Throat (From *Jisheng Bacun Fang*). Use grass stems or similar materials. Measure the length from the palm crease near the middle finger base to the tip of the middle finger of the sick child. Cut three such stems. Place two stems vertically, slightly slanted upwards from above the nipple, at their tips. Place one stem horizontally across them. Apply moxa cones at both ends of the horizontal stem. Moxibustion at each point, three moxa cones. This method has proven effective many times.
Treating infantile frequent yawning. Select Shangguan (ST7) acupoint.
Treating infantile stiff body. Opisthotonos. Moxibustion at a point three fen above the nasal root into the hairline. Three moxa cones. Then moxibustion at the interspace below Dazhui (GV14). Three moxa cones.
Treating infantile severe wind-leprosy. Moxibustion at Quchi (LI11) acupoint, bilateral. Number of cones varies by age. Moxibustion upon onset. Highly effective.
Treating any wind disease in infants that fails to respond to various treatments. Moxibustion at Lvgu (GB8) acupoint.

For newborns, if free of disease, one must absolutely avoid contrary acupuncture and moxibustion. If contrary moxibustion is performed, it causes pain and disturbs the five meridians, potentially leading to epilepsy due to fright. In the Heluo and Guanzhong regions, the climate is cold, and infants are prone to spasms. Therefore, contrary moxibustion is often performed on the third day after birth for prevention. Moxibustion at the cheek is also used to prevent trismus. In cases of trismus, the sublingual vessels are tense, and the muscles of the jaw are tight. Due to the cold climate there, bloodletting at the sublingual area followed by moxibustion at the cheek is employed to prevent trismus. In the Wu and Shu regions, the climate is warm, and this disease does not occur. Since medical formulas have been passed down to modern times, if one does not carefully distinguish between northern and southern differences and applies them blindly, it often harms infants. Thus, rural children, left to nature, generally survive without premature death. When infants cry from fright and exhibit limb twitching during sleep, with unresolved spasm and heat, acupuncture and moxibustion must be avoided. Scratching disturbs the hundred meridians and can still induce epilepsy through fright. Only Yin Epilepsy, trismus, and spasms may be treated with acupuncture and scratching. Generally, before moxibustion for epilepsy, the infant should be purged to empty the interior, then moxibustion is applied to the deficient state. Applying moxibustion without purging when excess pathogenic factors are present causes Qi obstruction, blocking front and back, which can be fatal. If the body is not very hot but there is fullness under the heart and abdomen, moxibustion may be applied. If there is high fever and fullness, purgation must precede moxibustion. Epilepsy attacks at dawn (Pingdan) involve the Foot Shaoyang channel. Attacks in the morning involve the Foot Jueyin channel. Attacks at noon involve the Foot Taiyin channel. Attacks at dusk involve the Foot Taiyin channel. Attacks at nightfall involve the Foot Yangming channel. Attacks at midnight involve the Foot Shaoyin channel. For right-sided epilepsy, observe the time of attack to determine the affected meridian and moxibustion site accordingly.
Epilepsy includes Five Zang epilepsies and Six Animal epilepsies. Pathology may be in the four limbs or within the abdomen. According to diagnostic signs, moxibustion is applied to the affected site. Even with few cones, recovery is certain. Losing the key principles leads to harm.
Wang Shi stated: Hair standing up with upward crying and laughing, dark complexion unchanged, are signs of epilepsy. Or slight fright with bluish color around nose and mouth, or slight fright with bluish color at the Ju men area, or fever with constant sweating on the head, or fever with vomiting and panting, or fever with staring eyes, or restlessness and fright during sleep with limb shaking, or dreaming laughter with limb shaking, or sinking of Qi with irrational anger, or difficulty swallowing milk, or sudden enlargement and darkening of pupils, or frequent yawning with upward gaze, or fever with difficult urination, or fever with blurred vision, or continuous vomiting and diarrhea with intermittent colic, or tongue playing and head shaking. These twenty signs are all early stages of epilepsy. Upon seeing these signs, apply heavy pressure to scratch the corresponding Yang meridians to make the infant cry suddenly. If an intermitted pulse is found, administer decoctions according to the formula. Another set of eight signs indicates deep organ involvement: staring, abdominal fullness, borborygmus, hematochezia, fever, trismus preventing suckling, opisthotonos with sweating and fever, unresponsiveness despite lying down, limb convulsions, and frequent fright. If these occur, decoctions and scratching are no longer sufficient; immediate moxibustion is required.
