The throat is the passage through which Qi ascends and descends. The epiglottis is the gateway for voice production. When Qi flows freely, sound encounters no obstruction. However, if Wind pathogen binds internally without being released externally, (it leads to loss of speech).
Lingyang Jiao Tang (Antelope Horn Decoction) [Source: *Shengji Zonglu*], treats loss of speech due to Stroke (Zhong Feng), and inability to move the hands and feet.
Ingredients: Lingyang Jiao (Antelope Horn, sliced), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome), Xixin (Asarum Root, removed seedlings and leaves), Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, removed forks), Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, removed joints), Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root, removed rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root).
Crush the herbs to the size of hemp seeds. Each dose consists of three Qianbi (approx. 9-10 grams). This formula is also known as Tianma San.
Jiang Fu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction) [Source: *Shenghui Fang*], treats loss of speech and muteness due to Stroke (Zhong Feng), Qi syncope with absent pulse, and spasm of the hands and feet.
Ingredients: Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, processed), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, processed until cracked, skin and umbilicus removed), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig, outer bark removed), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, soaked in wine and baked), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Xixin (Asarum Root, removed seedlings and leaves).
Crush the herbs to the size of hemp seeds. Each dose consists of three Qian.
Da Xuming Tang (Great Rescue Life Decoction) [Source: *Qianjin Fang*], treats Liver channel Wind syndrome, sudden aphonia, as well as hemiplegia of the five Zang organs and invasion by thief-Wind.
Ingredients: Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, 8 liang), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome, each 2 liang), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, each 1 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 4 liang), Xingren (Apricot Seed, 30 pieces).
Cut the herbs. Boil in 9 sheng of water until 4 sheng remain. Strain. Take 1 sheng warm, three times a day. If effective, follow this method.
Another Prescription [Source: *Qianjin Fang*], treats severe Wind invading the Zang and Fu organs, sudden inability to speak, drooping limbs, and insensitivity to pain or itching in the skin and flesh.
Ingredients: Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, each 3 liang), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Gegen (Pueraria Root), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Fuling (Poria), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root), Xixin (Asarum Root), Gancao (Licorice Root).
Cut the herbs. Boil in 1 dou of water until 4 sheng remain. Strain. Take 1 sheng warm, three times a day.
Another Prescription [Source: *Qianjin Fang*], treatment is identical to Da Xuming Tang; suitable for postpartum women, the elderly, and children.
Ingredients: Mahuang (Ephedra Stem), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome, each 3 liang), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Gancao (Licorice Root, each 3 liang), Xingren (Apricot Seed, 40 pieces).
Cut the herbs. Boil in 9 sheng of water until 4 sheng remain. Strain. Take 1 sheng warm, three times a day.
For loss of voice due to Wind-Cold and pharyngeal discomfort. Regarding such Stroke cases, there are many formulas involving Bamboo Sap (Zhuli). Although the medication here is minimal, it targets the specific ailment.
Ingredients: Tongcao (Tetrapanax Pith), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, each 1 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, each 2 liang), Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, 1.5 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 0.5 liang), Xingren (Apricot Seed).
Cut the herbs. Boil in 7 sheng of water until 3 sheng remain. Strain. Divide into three doses, taken warm. Gradually increase the dosage.
Qianghuo Renshen Tang (Notopterygium and Ginseng Decoction), treats Stroke (Zhong Feng), loss of speech and muteness.

Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction), treats loss of speech and muteness due to Stroke (Zhong Feng), with miraculous effect. (Also known as Sheng Dihuang Zhi Yinzi).
Ingredients: Sheng Dihuang (Fresh Rehmannia Root, juice), Dan Zhuli (Light Bamboo Sap, each half liang), Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root, removed rhizome, 1 liang), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, processed until cracked, skin and umbilicus removed, half liang).
Crush the first four ingredients to the size of hemp seeds. Each dose consists of three Qianbi. Add a small amount of Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) and Dihuang Zhi (Rehmannia Juice) to one zhan of water. Boil together until one zhan remains. Take warm on an empty stomach, at noon, and before sleep. One dose each time.
Zhuli Tang (Bamboo Sap Decoction), treats Stroke (Zhong Feng), loss of speech and muteness, drowsiness, and failure to recognize people.
Ingredients: Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), Jingli (Schizonepeta Sap), Lizhi (Pear Juice, each 2 he), Chen Jiangzhi (Aged Soy Sauce, half he).
Mix well. Boil for one or two boils. Filter again. Warm and administer slowly via instillation.

Ingredients: Sheng Fuzi (Raw Aconite Lateral Root, skin and umbilicus removed), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, each half liang), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 1 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 1 fen).
Grind into powder. Each dose consists of 4 Qian. Boil in one zhan of water until 0.7 zhan remains. Strain and take warm.

Ingredients: Baizi Ren (Biota Seed, raw and ground, 2 liang), Jifenbai (Chicken Droppings White, fried, 2 liang), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig, outer bark removed, 2 liang), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, unpeeled and sliced, 1 liang).

Grind into powder. Mix with jujube pulp to make pills the size of a marble. Take one pill each time, dissolved in warm water.

In ancient times, Xu Yizong of the Tang Dynasty, when serving as Military Adjutant to Prince Xincai of Chen, treated Grand Marshal Liu who suffered from Stroke and could not speak. He prepared several hu of this decoction and placed it under the bed. The vapor resembled smoke. That evening, the patient could speak. The efficacy is due to the fumigation power of the medicine.
