江南地区有一种名为射工的毒虫。它又名短狐，又名蜮。这种虫子形状像甲虫。《外台秘要》记载：它通体黑色，形状像大的飞虫。它生活在有水的草丛中，当人涉水时，如果人有影子而没有看到实物，就会被它攻击。它的诊断方法是：刚得病时怕冷，轻微头痛，眼眶疼痛，心中烦闷，疼痛向下延伸至肘部。观察患处……不超过二十天就会发作。想要知道是否中了水毒，可以煮五六升热水，将五升小蒜切碎投入汤中，慢慢加热不要让它太烫。去掉药渣后用来洗澡。如果是水毒，身体会发出红斑；如果没有变化，则不是水毒，应当按其他疾病治疗。《本草》记载：水弩、射工、短狐等虫生长在山水之间，含着沙子射人的影子从而致病。症状像疟疾，或者像流行性传染病，名叫沙病。现在的人称之为沙子症。然而这本来并不是射工、水弩的毒性，不过是山间的瘴气，感受后而成病。现在用绳子擦拭所患之处，都是太阳经脉经过的地方。邪气排出后病就好了。江西袁州有一条河，那里多生水弩。当地人说，这种虫子射人，人被射中就会生病。所以用绵絮擦拭身上，如果擦到像针刺一样的感觉，就用针挑破，让血流出，病就好了。然而当地人整天喝这种水，并在这里洗澡，因为这种虫子听到水动就会射人，当地人想进入这种水，就先拿石头打水使水波动，然后才下水，这样虫子已经射过但不能射中人。
方剂
五香散（出自《千金方》）
治疗江南毒瓦斯、恶核、射工、暴肿生疮。
甲香、犀角、鳖甲、升麻、薰陆香、乌头、丁香、沉香、黄连、青木香、羚羊角、黄芩、甘草。
以上药材都用水送服方寸匕大小的量，每天三次。用水加少许清洗患处，仍用鸡蛋清调和涂抹在肿胀处，干了就更换。另一版本没有青木香。

In the Jiangnan region, there is a venomous insect known as Shegong (Shooting Worker). It is also called Duanhu (Short Fox) or Yu (Hidden One). This insect resembles a beetle. The *Waitai Miyao* records: it is entirely black and shaped like a large flying insect. It lives in grassy areas near water. When a person wades into water, if the person casts a shadow but no object is seen, they are attacked by it. The diagnostic method is: upon initial onset, there is aversion to cold, slight headache, pain in the eye sockets, mental restlessness, and pain extending downwards to the elbows. Observing the affected area... the condition manifests within twenty days. To determine if one has contracted Water Poison (Shuidu), boil five or six sheng of hot water, add five sheng of chopped Allium macrostemon (Suan, Small Garlic), heat gently without making it too hot. Remove the dregs and bathe in the liquid. If it is Water Poison, red spots will appear on the body; if there is no change, it is not Water Poison, and other diseases should be treated accordingly. The *Bencao* states: insects such as Shuinu (Water Crossbow), Shegong, and Duanhu live between mountains and streams. They hold sand in their mouths and shoot at people's shadows to cause illness. Symptoms resemble malaria or an epidemic disease, named Shabing (Sand Disease). Nowadays, people call it "Sand Particle Syndrome." However, this is originally not the toxicity of Shegong or Shuinu, but rather miasma from the mountains that causes illness upon contraction. Now, rubbing the affected area with a rope targets the Taiyang Meridian (Taiyang Channel). Wherever the path passes, the pathogenic qi exits and the illness heals. In a river in Yuanzhou, Jiangxi, Shuinu abounds. Locals say this insect shoots at people, and those hit become ill. Therefore, they wipe their bodies with cotton; if they feel a sensation like needle pricks, they prick it with a needle to let blood flow out, and the illness heals. However, locals drink this water all day and bathe in it. Because this insect shoots when it hears water movement, when locals want to enter the water, they first throw stones to agitate the water, then enter. By then, the insect has already shot but cannot hit the person.

Wuxiang San (Five-Aromatic Powder) (from *Qianjin Fang*)
Treats Jiangnan toxic vapors, Ehe (Malignant Nodules), Shegong, sudden swelling and sores.
Jiaxiang (Calappa Calappa Shell), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn), Biejia (Softshell Turtle Shell), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Xunluxiang (Frankincense), Wutou (Aconiti Radix), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Qingmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Lingyangjiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Take all ingredients as powder, one fangcunbi (square-inch spoonful) dose with water, three times daily. Wash the affected area with water mixed with a small amount. Still use egg white to mix and apply to the swelling; change when dry. Another version lacks Qingmuxiang.

Treats Shegong toxic swelling and sores.
