The meaning of "Liu" (Tumor/Growth) refers to stagnation and retention that does not dissipate. If Qi and Blood flow smoothly without deviating from normal patterns, the physical form remains harmonious, and no superfluous excrescences occur. However, when Qi mechanism becomes depressed, knotted, and obstructed,
the treatment principles are the same as those for "Ying" (Goiter/Neck Mass). The difference is that Ying can be treated with needle incision, whereas Liu must strictly avoid being cut open or ruptured.
*Rumen Shiqin* records: When Dairen (Zhang Congzheng) was in Xihua County, the crowd mocked him for inducing vomiting and diarrhea. Wei Shouzhi was dining with Dairen in a restaurant when they saw a man with a
growth on his body, located exactly where it needed to be removed. Wei initially did not believe it could be done. Dairen said, "How about I help you remove this growth?" The man replied, "No one dares to cut it." Dairen said, "I do not use a knife to cut; rather, I employ another method to release blood." First, carefully observe the wrist pulse, finding the pulse irregular and unyielding (indicating abnormal pulse quality). Looking towards the light, it appeared transparent like peach gum. The man's family wanted to abandon him, but upon seeing this, Dairen said, "A growth on the back of the hand is called Jiao Liu (Gelatinous Tumor), and one on the face is called Fen Liu (Powder Tumor)." This type of growth is not hard; it is soft to palpation, indicating it is a Xue Liu (Blood Tumor). If left untreated, it may grow as large as a plate, at which point it cannot be eliminated again, though it is not a fatal disease. Nevertheless, it must strictly not be cut open.
